What states are warming the fastest?
CBS News ^ | June 4, 2014

Posted on 06/04/2014 3:42:14 PM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

The United States is warming fastest at two of its corners, in the Northeast and the Southwest, an analysis of federal temperature records shows.

Northeastern states - led by Maine and Vermont - have gotten the hottest in the last 30 years in annual temperature, gaining 2.5 degrees on average. But Southwestern states have heated up the most in the hottest months: The average New Mexico summer is 3.4 degrees warmer now than in 1984; in Texas, the dog days are 2.8 degrees hotter.

"In the United States, it isn't warming equally," said Kelly Redmond, climatologist at the Western Regional Climate Center in Reno, Nevada. "Be careful about extrapolating from your own backyard to the globe."

The Southwest warming, especially in the summer, seems to be driven by dryness, because when there is little water the air and ground warm up faster, said Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

"Heat and drought are a vicious cycle that has been hitting the Southwest hard in recent years," Hayhoe said.

So the parts of the United States that are close to the oceans - the largest heat sinks on Earth - are warming faster than the areas in the central plains.

This makes total sense, if you’re a jorn0list.

The Global Warming Hysteria...just so I have this all straight..

It's Too Hot = Global Warming

It's Too Cold = Global Warming

Too Much Snow = Global Warming

Not Enough Snow = Global Warming

Too Many Hurricanes = Global Warming

A Lull in Hurricanes = Global Warming

Too Much Rain = Global Warming

Not Enough Rain = Global Warming

Polar Ice Caps Shrinking = Global Warming

Polar Ice Caps Growing = Global Warming

El Nino = Global Warming

El Nina = Global Warming

I'm suprised we've lasted this long as a species with all of this Global Warming going on...

I always marvel at how they call an area that’s experiencing unusual temperatures as proof of global warming but the next state over isn’t.

I wonder if, in all this rush to predict doom and disaster from global warming, anyone has considered the observed phenomenon of urban heat sinks or urban heat islands. The Southwest is increasingly urbanized and cities are growing in the Northeast. Just my wild shot.

Climate scientists suggested 1984 as a starting date because 30 years is a commonly used time period

Uh huh. Just happened to pick 1984 as a starting point.

In what branch of science or statistics or any other field is 30 years a commonly used time period?

Lying is soooo easy for these people.

30 years is nothing in terms of weather cycles. A few thousand years ago the indians were supporting some fairly large populations in the southwest based on the ability to farm there.

Apparently she is not aware that the drier the air, the higher the temperature, given a constant energetic input.

The climate industry is making a full court press, they know they are losing public support so they are trying to personalize the issue. See your state is getting warmer. I’ll not comment on the merits, just the motivation for this article.

Hello..there is still ice on Lake Superior that will likely remain until July. If CBS want to know about hot let them dig up the temperatures for the summer of 1934 and compare them to today’s readings.
