A public welcome home celebration featuring Grammy-winning singer Carole King in honor of freed POW Bowe Bergdahl in the tiny town of Hailey, Idaho was abruptly cancelled today.
The official reason given was a concern for public safety, but MailOnline has learned that it was not the only reason the party was scrubbed.
Today's decision follows a row that erupted in Hailey between Mayor Fritz Haemmerle and US Army Platoon Commander Jonathan Kennedy, who lives in Hailey.
And Kennedy wasn't the only towns person who voiced disapproval of a celebration for the soldier under fire.
Mayor Haemmerle wanted to throw a welcome home party for Bergdahl, who has been released after five years as a Taliban hostage.
But since claims of Bergdahl’s alleged desertion in Afghanistan and the political fallout surrounding his return, the mayor’s office has been inundated with calls and emails in opposition to the plans.
The Army tank platoon commander weighed in and said a public ceremony to celebrate Bergdahl’s return would be a ‘monstrous profanity’.
In an email to Mayor Haemmerle - seen by MailOnline - former US Army platoon leader Jonathan Kennedy said: ‘If Individual members of the community wish to hold sedate, private celebrations to commemorate Bowe Bergdahl's homecoming, they are of course free and welcome to do so.
It would be, however, a monstrous profanity if a public ceremony, financed by public money, were to be held.
‘It would be more monstrous still if this ceremony were to, in any way, heap undeserved adulation on Bergdahl, or to adopt the sickly hue of ostentatious jingoism that all too often colors such occasions.’
Kennedy is referring to the six soldiers later killed in Paktika province, Afghanistan believed to be in connection with attempts to rescue Bergdahl.

Kind of a weird choice for Carole King to be scheduled to sing for a Taliban symp. I would of thought Yusef Islam/Cat Stevens more Bergdahl’s style.
I wouldn’t put it past 0h0m0 to host one of his white hut parties for the deserter and his family.
I’ll bet the intrepid reporters of The Daily Mail had a hunch about local military opinion and simply did a Google search, found a phone number, and dialed away. And, voila, a scoop! Meanwhile, Chuck Todd is tweeting White House talking points. What a disgrace.
Maybe Susan Rice should talk to them.

Carole King lives just over the mountain from Hailey. Not that big a star if they make her drive herself there.
I remember my sister got her album in 1971. Haven’t heard of her doing much since then.
She sang “You’ve Got A Friend” in front of Fidel Castro and dedicated the song to him.
She’s probably another big fan of the snow *sniff* which is why I heard all those celebs kiss his butt. He trades off cocaine for praise. I didn’t believe it until Kate Moss and Naomi Cambell went down there because obviously they are sooo interested in “socialism”.
Oh. Well, it’s nice her life had a purpose then. What a loser.
Upon first sniff of desertion, the town was foolish not to indefinitely suspend all planned activity.
She used to live in ID and had her $16 million ranch for sale in 2010. Not sure if she is still in ID, but that’s likely why she agreed to do this.
Late caller on Levin today called him a defector. A deserter just runs away. A defector goes over to the other side and fights against his country.
This seems to be the case in this situation.
