National Republicans find themselves in a political jam over the looming Senate runoff in Mississippi, with some establishment operatives now wishing that tea party challenger Chris McDaniel had just won outright or that six-term incumbent Thad Cochran hadnt run at all.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee is in the most uncomfortable spot, as the top institutional defender of incumbents. It is pledging its full support to Cochran while also having to grapple with the reality that McDaniel, who might well win the nomination, is a political figure it cant control, and giving Democrats reason to dream about a seat in Mississippi for the first time since Dixiecrats fell out of vogue.
Its worse that it went into a runoff. It would have been better had McDaniel just gotten those last hundred votes. Its like [watching] this slow death thats unpleasant, said one veteran GOP operative, who spoke on the condition of anonymity so he might speak candidly about the race.
The operative also acknowledged the other key disadvantage Cochran faces in trying to levy enough support particularly financially over the next three weeks to overcome the vote deficit he had in the primary and win the runoff. Tea party conservative groups tend to spend a lot of money, indiscriminately and without larger strategy, to support candidates who clear their ideological purity tests. Establishment groups tend to think about an entire electoral map and their chances of winning each race on a sliding scale before opening up their wallets. Already in the Mississippi Republican U.S. Senate primary, outside groups have shelled out more than $8 million, with approximately $5.5 million of that favoring McDaniel.

The man is a dimorat at heart first last and always, which means of course that he is a politician at heart; hence he wanted to hold on to undeserved and misused power. I hope he goes down in ignominy.
Maybe the GOPe is threatening a scorched earth strategy. If Cochran can't win they would rather a Democrat win it than the Tea Party.

Sad to say, Karl.
That is their most likely scenario
but true to form the the Gop-ers will run like that the Rats that they are.. going to run on to Miss Lindsey’s thing in SC and so on and so on.
Never forget that Senator Cruz is the ultimate goal of destruction.
That would be “run like the Rats that they are”!!!!
Sorry..tired .
A candidate that got on the ballot under MS laws.

It’s great to see the National Republican Senatorial Committee a little frustrated. It didn’t have to be this way but it seems they have “purity tests” of their own and being a constitutional conservative that doesn’t compromise with evil disqualifies you. I pray McDaniel wins or Cochran decides to bow out or gets trounced in a debate that sinks it for him. Tea Party types are in it for the long haul. We know it’s going to be tuff since we’re fighting statists in both parties that have no morals.
Same thing happened in VA that was the Dems plan to defeat Ken so VA. wound up with Clinton’s stooge.
The election system needs to be cleaned up. Lots of voter fraud, open primaries, no ID even though blacks also are in favor of ID.
Romney wasn’t right about much but the fact is Obama’s approval doesn’t go down because of government dependent voters who vote for their government checks.
Also, when the whole thing comes crashing down we must address the fact that once underpaid government sector civil servants make 50 percent more than the people they are supposed to serve. This has happened because they vote for people who incestuously provide payback for their votes. The end result is benefits, pay and pensions we can no longer afford.
Wrong!
Cochran needs to announce his retirement this week and the national party needs to support McDaniel.
We still need the Senate Seat in our column, not the Dems, and the GOP needs to make up with the Tea Party. This is a first step in that direction.
It’s guaranteed that if McDaniel wins the Pub-Es will do everything they can to help ensure his defeat.
Just see my tag line for the reason why.
