An independent analysis has confirmed search teams are looking in the right area of the southern Indian Ocean for MH370, a week after it was revealed that pings detected more than 2,000 kilometres off the coast of Perth were not from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane. A new specific underwater search zone of up to 60,000 square kilometres is now being determined after scientists reviewed original data and concluded that the search should still follow the original arc defined by British satellite company Inmarsat. :snip: By going back over the original data and satellite information collected by British company Inmarsat, searchers said they remained confident in a long flight path 'arc' over the southern Indian Ocean holding the key to the plane's location. The 'arc' is based on the seventh and final 'handshake' between the Boeing 777 and satellites on March 8. The ATSB said the independent analysis had confirmed the original arc is still the right place to search. 'At the time MH370 reached this arc...

In related news, (separate link below) the Aussies are looking to contract out the search work:

"The tender documents set a strict timetable, with the contractor required to map 5,000 square kilometres every 25 days or risk having payments withheld. The company will need to have sonar equipment that can work at depths of up to 6,000 metres, and navigate holes, trenches and ridges on the seabed."

Couldn’t they have called on a CSI team to measure the temperature of the water off the Florida keys, and extrapolate where the plane may have gone down?

How can they know they are searching the correct location before the wreckage is found?

That location in Indian ocean is a long ways from last sighting of the plane in SE-Asia. Why the pilots did not communicate with any air traffic control anywhere in all that time it took for the plane to fly before ditching in waters of Indian Ocean?

Has any one heard of any plane in trouble where pilots kept silent for 2 to 3 hours of flying time?

No..Juan Williams is a total Obama hack because Obama is A-A just like him and liberal just like him. He is pretty smart in making convoluted arguments and basically filibuster other guests. When he is on The Five, he talks more than any one else, which is a pretty effective filibuster.

So, no he is not stupid.

The whereabouts of Malaysian flight MH360 and the provenance of one “Barack Hussein Obama” remain two of the most perplexing mysteries of our age.

I bet Obama will trade America's whole drone capability to get the one jetliner back.

CNN runs thought provoking news, I think that I will be pondering hurricane sexism, for years to come.

I don’t know. I’m voting for stupid. I remember when so many FReepers were over the moon about saving poor little Juanita when NPR fired his azz. Frankly I wish Ailes would dump him too. I guess they keep him around to shine Hume;s golf shoes....

Of course his ideas and agenda is stupid. But it requires a genius to defend them and tie everyone around him in knots.

The plane is in Waziristan. Why do you think Obummer just unleashed the brain trust of Taliban? Stay out of all tall buildings on November 11th.

Not in the entire history of modern aviation 2 pilots and a crew of 5 have failed to communicate when in trouble. Why did the plane make a 180 degree turn and flew on the only path to evade radar detection?

It is unprecedented to have no wreckage at this point, not a single floating spork. That plane is on land, and loading up with the Jihadis that Obama just freed.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Muzzy congresscritter Keith Ellison was in on it too.

Has any one heard of any plane in trouble where pilots kept silent for 2 to 3 hours of flying time?

There was a case in 1999 involving a Learjet which had departed Orlando bound for Dallas. At 1327:18Z, the pilot acknowledged Jacksonville ATC's clearance, "three nine zero bravo alpha." That was the last utterance heard from that airplane. At 1713Z, it dove into a field in South Dakota at nearly supersonic speed.

The NTSB determined that "The probable cause of this accident was incapacitation of the flight crew members as a result of their failure to receive supplemental oxygen following a loss of cabin pressurization, for undetermined reasons."

My stab at an MH370 theory:

Shortly after exiting Malaysian ATC, the captain locked the copilot out of the cockpit and turned left, intending to fly to some destination in the 'stans.

The alarmed copilot turned on his cell phone, which had been turned off prior to departure from Kuala Lumpur (there are records to this effect), hoping to call for help. But there was no service.

The copilot then arranged an assault on the cockpit. At some point, they passed close enough to a cell tower for the copilot's phone to check in. Aha! Service! (Reportedly, there are logs showing his phone checking in). But the copilot was by then too engaged in the struggle to notice.

Sometime later, the pilot, annoyed by repeated attempts to breach the cockpit, decided to subdue the passengers by depressurizing the passenger cabin. He figured the special oxygen supply for the flight crew would keep him alive.

But something went wrong. The depressurization gambit failed. The pilot's oxygen proved insufficient, and he went under along with everybody else.

At this point, the captain had steered the airplane in a southerly direction, intending to evade Indian radar. The autopilot maintained that flight path until the airplane ran out of fuel, and the plane crashed somewhere near where Inmarsat has calculated.

Simple physics. They know how fast it was traveling and it’s approximate altitude and it’s direction.

Through extrapolation, they can pinpoint the area to look.
