Blame for the recent violence that's swept through Springfield lies in the hands of the young men committing the crimes and those who tacitly abet them not the law enforcement officials and religious leaders trying to keep the peace, according to the Rev. Talbert W. Swan II, president of the Greater Springfield NAACP and pastor of Spring of Hope Church.
"Don't blame the police, you know, when Pookie gets shot and you knew the kind of life Pookie was living, and you knew the path that Pookie was on and you never addressed it with Pookie," Swan said during Monday's broadcast of his weekly radio program, "The Spoken Word" (video below).
Swan said that while he "consistently calls communities of faith and law enforcement to accountability," people who come in contact with perpetrators of street violence the perpetrators' parents, grandparents, godparents and other relatives need to reject such behavior.
"The police cannot prevent your child from keeping that gun ... and leaving with it, but you can," Swan said, calling on communities most affected by gun violence to step up and do their part to help stop it.
"At some point, black community/Latino community, we've got to take responsibility for what's happening with our own children," the pastor said.

I thought this was going to be a dog shooting story. I guess Pookie is a ‘banger, not a bowser.
I thought it was dog shootings too. I thought it was in defense of cops shooting dogs whenever they feel like it.
“My baby ain’t done never hurt nobody.”
Urban violence is the result of a Democrat-constructed, Pavlovian experiment called the Great Society. Judged by Democrat standards, it has been a smashing success nationwide.
I remember when Springfield was a nice city.
Don’t tell me that neither of you have ever seen “New Jack City”
Pookie belongs in the pokey.
But the Democrats run (or ruin) Springfield, Boston, and much of urbanized Massachusetts. They gave us Kennedy(s), Kerry, Warren, Markey, Barney Frank, and many other communists, marxists, crooks and crazies.
I would have thought that Mass. would be a peaceful place to live in. Where did I go wrong?
Our Pookie certainly doesn’t belong in any pokey. I’d have withdrawal symptoms without our daily toons.
the American problem with violence is not in the gun store, it is around the dinner table. It is a family issue - the raising of children to become responsible citizens.
I have/had relatives that grew up in Springfield years ago. They told stores and show me pictures of how nice that city once was. Today, their are still nice areas, but overall it sill not a place where most people would have their dream house, etc.
