Smoking marijuana as a teenager lowers IQ for LIFE, scientists warn

Smoking cannabis as a teenager lowers IQ into adulthood and could have a lifelong impact, researchers have warned.

U.S. researchers found the damaging effects of the drug remained even if users stopped smoking marijuana as adults.

They said teenagers face increased risks from smoking cannabis, because the brain is rapidly developing at this time.

The scientists, from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) in the U.S., added that smoking cannabis affects critical thinking and memory during use, with the effects persisting for days.

Reviewing a range of studies on marijuana smoking, they reiterated that cannabis impairs driving and increases the risk of being involved in a car accident.

The risks are further enhanced when combining marijuana with alcohol, they reported in the New England Journal of Medicine.

As someone who smoke a LOT of pot as a teen, I believe this study is probably correct.

Pot legalization is to level the playing field to bring the intelligence of whites down to that of affirmative action’s protected classes. Legally AA can’t stand much longer, and by the time it is consigned to the junkbin of history young whites will be almost identical to the permanent urban underclass. I see it today: no job skills, limited education, tattoos everywhere, rampant drug use, kids out of wedlock, etc..

Sad to watch.

That settles it, because we all know that if something is bad for children, it should be illegal for adults.

I notice the article says alcohol is a contributing factor as well. I guess we’ll be making that illegal too.

At any rate, the last study claiming this was debunked pretty quickly. Turns out the same results can be attributed to just socioeconomic status, and the authors did not normalize for that.

In fact, this latest study doesn’t seem to be a study at all, but rather a meta-study...a review of previous studies. Bet my next paycheck it is the debunked study (from New Zealand last year) that the authors of this article are referencing.

Appreciate your post, but wonder how old you were when you stated ‘heavy use’. The concern is that use during years of active brain development will alter the brain structurally, and have long-term, if not permanent effects. IMHO it's not a risk anyone should take lightly.

I think occasional marijuana use is just fine - but I am one of those people who does not do things in moderation. I smoked a lot of weed back when I was a hippie, and I know I have lost a few points off my IQ. But, they were extra points I didn’t need.

I started smoking weed again recently after many years of abstinence. Over the course of 3 or 4 months my work deteriorated, I was having trouble keeping organized, and I was put on probation at work. My wife was making preliminary moves to seize control of our assets. I quit smoking and it is happy time again, at work and at home.

Dang it!

Having a higher IQ than average is a gift but also a curse.....you tend to realize its lawyers guns and money time quicker and absorb how bad it really is in America these days culture wise...its hard to be oblivious... the ignorance is bliss thing isn’t there

So very well said. The curse of conservatism - which I equate with higher IQ: "Clarity"

Well, now Obama has something to blame other than Bush. And now we know, where the 57 or was it 58 or 59 States he's visited came from. Along with all the other gaffes, stupid comments and his complete inability to learn from reality comes from.

Does this include the possibility that teenagers with lower IQs tend to smoke more marijuana than teenagers with higher IQs?
*************************
A logical question from a Centurian driver...

My question is How does IQ change when you compare with people that smoke beginning after adult brain development occurs ,,, lets say 25+ years.

Judging based on the linked article, neither of our questions were considered, as they are too logical. No, they concentrated on answering esoteric things... Eg, second hand smoke, prenatal, and the like... Things more likely to garner funding.

Never smoked dope. Not once. Nor cigs either. Saw my great aunt who smoked like a chimney and saw what her teeth and mouth and face looked like after 40 years of that. No thanks.

My experience with dope smokers was that of a bunch of losers who were either on food stamps and didn’t want to work, or the ones at my undergrad (you know the one) who were trust fund babies for whom college was a step required to get an installment in their payout plan for that. No real ‘career’ aspirations other than leaning on family for money somehow.

It was obvious to me that it made them, at least temporarily, much slower mentally. That and the fact that most of them were lib art majors. Not like they had 8am modern physics or differential equations classes to be sharp for or anything. So why not light up a doobie at midnight, right?

Decided the only thing standing between me and abject starvation (given I’m no beauty queen and don’t have a trust fund) was my brain. Decided to never ever do anything that might endanger that. It’s not as though the ‘off label pharmaceuticals’ have any sort of rigorous testing or process control in their manufacturing process or anything. No one to sue if something goes really wrong. I don’t particularly care for living in a cardboard box under an overpass.

In the STEM fields I have known exactly ONE weed smoker that smoked it on a regular basis and did ‘the job’. Most of the drug use was other stuff. X, special K, etc. That and STEM fields tend to do a lot of testing for stuff. And being stored in the fat, THC might show up at any time on one of those if you’ve lost weight.

My biggest question for the dopers was this: What are you escaping from? If life is so horrible why not change it. All you’re doing is wasting time. When you sober up, life’ll still suck only you’ll have less time to fix that.

Life is too short to spend it escaping from life. And working in the STEM field I was in you only have to test positive for something once for it to be a career ending move. Forget ever being hired to be anything other than ‘data scribe’. Management or anything interesting is out of the question with a conviction like that. Much too risky. And they tested for stuff too. I had many many pee tests in my career.

Should it be illegal? Why? Alcohol is legal too. If you hit my car and hurt one of my kids while under the influence of somethingorother, the law will be the least of your concerns...I’m the kind of person who will WANT you to get low bail for that...

The way crime statistics are reported have been changed over time the same way that unemployment numbers are underreported and the cost of living numbers are totally bogus. Murders are now reported in the national stats as suspicious deaths if no one has been charged with the murder. If you think violent crime is down, you’ve been smoking too much weed.

Well the high IQ senior citizens I know who use it are still way up there on the IQ testing, even after all these years.
