House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has urged President Barack Obama to make a deal on immigration, especially amnesty reform for children of illegal immigrants.
But during an interview with CBS 6 in Virginia, Cantor warned Obama that his "my highway or the highway" approach to reform would not lead to legislation being passed during his tenure.
"I have told the president, there are some things we can work on together," said Cantor, who is facing a challenge from tea party candidate Dave Brat, an economics professor, in Tuesdays GOP primary in Virginia.
Referring to a possible amnesty deal for millions of undocumented children, he added, "We can work on the border security bill together, we can work on something like the kids. "So far, the president has just insisted that its all or nothing, [it is] my way or the highway. Thats not going to happen."
Brat, who teaches at Randolph-Macon College near Richmond, Virginia., has slammed Cantors immigration reform stance during the campaign.
"Eric Cantor is saying we should bring more folks into the country, increase the labor supply and by doing so, lower wage rates for the working person," Brat said, according to Reuters. "His policies make no sense."
According to The Daily Caller, the Rev. Richard Ryscavage, a member of the new White House panel on immigration, says Obama is willing to hammer out an immigration package with House Republicans.
Ryscavage, a Jesuit priest and director of Fairfield Universitys Center for Faith and Public Life, said a compromise is what the White House thinks is "going to happen, so theyre [publicly] asking for a lot of stuff that privately they dont think theyre going to get" to reach a deal.

Hahaha. That’s awesome!! Good for you!!
How about securing the border now? You’ve been running your mouth for years promising border control in the future. We’ve had years worth of “future” and still no border control. Why should anyone believe you will enforce some future law when you won’t enforce existing law?
Yup. I say the GOP should make it clear that we aren’t even going to discuss amnesty till we see serious and measurable border control for at least 5 years.
The word is out throughout Latin America, if you can get to the USA and bring kids, you will be able to stay. That’s why there’s a huge surge of illegals with children crossing the border now.
Cantor is a FOOL ,Obama does not a Deal ,he wants COMPLETE Surrender of the country to him
I used to think Cantor had a brain.
Obama now uses it as a basketball.
The next cry will be to give amnesty to their moms. The poor kids can’t sleep at night thinking the nasty Americans are coming for their mother, then their father, their poor sickly grandparents, etc.
“my highway or the highway”
Here’s a thought, Cantor: Howzabout you and Obama get on whatever highway will take you far away from us and keep on riding.
Oh, you are such a meanie! Didn’t you read that Cantor says he told Obamugabe, “...we can work on something like the kids...”? See? It’s for the children.
Yup. I say the GOP should make it clear that we arent even going to discuss amnesty till we see serious and measurable border control for at least 5 years.
And we certainly don’t need any more legislation to secure the border; just enforce what is in place.
Thats why theres a huge surge of illegals with children crossing the border now.
You think they are making it here on their own? I say the Soros Administration and Mexico are transporting them here. Overwhelm the system, destroy the rule of law, and eradicate our culture. All part of the fundamental transformation.
We have been demanding that since Ronald Reagan and Ted Kennedy screwed the country with the last amnesty bill. Where has that got us?
Has to something more than just cheap labor to the plan from both sides?.
