BEIRUT Insurgents seized control early Tuesday of most of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, including the provincial government headquarters, offering a powerful demonstration of the mounting threat posed by extremists to Iraqs teetering stability.
Fighters with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), an al-Qaeda offshoot, overran the entire western bank of the city overnight after Iraqi soldiers and police apparently fled their posts, in some instances discarding their uniforms as they sought to escape the advance of the militants.
In Baghdad, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced a general mobilization and asked parliament to declare a state of emergency, saying the government would not allow the area to fall under the shadows of terror and terrorists.
Iraqs speaker of parliament, Osama Nujaifi, said Mosul, Iraqs third-largest city and the effective capital of northern Iraq, is now entirely in insurgent hands.
When the battle got tough in the city of Mosul, the troops dropped their weapons and abandoned their posts, making it an easy prey for the terrorists, he told a televised news conference in Baghdad.
All key facilities are now controlled by the insurgents, including the airport and the prisons, said Nujaifi, who is from Mosul.

Paging John McCain. Your DoD executive jet is standing by...
Been following it for hours....
cluster**** in action.
Can someone please explain why we ever went to that hellhole to begin with??? I cant see a single thing there worth American lives!! What a foolish waste of lives/treasure... :(
Ah, well. At least Ubama gave peace a chance.
Maybe next time he can try buying the world a Coke.
Iran now getting involved, great....
Iran Govt points out that the shia holy shrines in Iraq (Kerbala, Najaf, Samara Khazemain) are “red lines” for Iran.
Does this mean that the terrorists that the US is arming in Syria are working with the terrorists in Iraq who want to topple the gov that replaced the one we toppled?
That sounds about right!
Got it in one......and this lot ISIS, i can tell you are renowned for being brutal and much worse than the normal AQ, if that can even be comprehended.
....aaaand Zero is preparing US to become province of Caliphate.
This “offensive” is being financed by the Saudis. They are attempting to establish an Arabic speaking Sunni confederation that would include large parts of Syria and Iraq to oppose Iran. Post bin Laden al Queda is a Saudi financed international Sunni fighting force. The capture of Mosul is the high point of this campaign. Soon Iran will be forced to intervene to protect Shi’ite interests in Iraq.
Sorry if you think it was a waste, but I spent 2 years there as a contractor, and what I can say is that the US Military was killing those a$$holes by the thousands. Now that we pulled out, they are getting to run another country and have a base of operations. Gee, when they had Afghanistan it really didn’t work out for us so well.
oh great more loons getting involved...
PKK, we are ready to support KRG against ISIS
Bet a lot of heads are rolling in Mosul today.
Jihadi sources claim 15 “attack helicopters” seized along with missiles at Mosul airbase.
great, just great.
ISIS have also seized the al-Ghazlani military base in Mosul area

70 years later we still have troops in both Germany and Japan. 60 years later we still have troops in Korea. All have strategic interest to the US. If we take a look a map, Iraq is to the west and Afghanistan is to the east of one of our next wars. But obozo is going to pull us out of both and give Iran the advantage. The PKK has been a thorn in the Iraqi’s side as well as Turkey and want their own autonomous region. But IIRC, their idealogy based on marxism. I could be wrong though.
I agree with your sentiments, but all the Obama White Hut had to do when coming into office was negotiate a Status of Forces Agreement with the Iraqi government. They didn’t take it seriously because it wasn’t “the right war” and now Iraq has been overrun by Al Queda.
A total cluster.
I agree Zero totally F’d it up, but my point was even being there in the first place was a huge mistake. So many good American lives wasted for muslim filth!!
Obama and his crew said we would leave Irag stable and prosperous. BS. Of course everything he says is BS.
“...the terrorists that the US is arming in Syria are working with the terrorists in Iraq ...”
President Obama was “as mad as hell” when he read in the papers that the US is arming terrorists!!
Keep in mind the following:
* Soetoro, now posing as “Obama,” has helped Pakistan as much as possible.
* Soetoros first homo wife at Haaaavud was from Pakistan.
* Soetoro and wifey secretly disappeared while in Pakistan for many months.
* Pakistan already has the A-Bomb.
* The territorial joining of the Poppies of Afghanistan and the Plutonium of Pakistan will pose an interesting challenge to The Plan of Iran.
They liked wearing the outfit and collecting the paycheck until they realized the job came with other responsibilities. Reminds me of some Guardsmen during the run up to Desert Storm.
"Whaaaat??? We've gotta fight too? But I'm a conscientious objector."
Al Qaeda in Iraq. The Taliban in Pakistan. Maybe Obama can release some more terrorists.
The Democrats hitched their wagon to Obama and he has pulled them over a cliff.
EVERY terrorist operation from now belongs to the Democrat Party.
Makes you wish Saddam was back in charge.
He was a double edged sword — ran Iraq as any Muslim state should be run and he kept Iran in check.
Visit the Iraqi Kurdistan Region some time then and talk to the Kurds. I have. It was worth it just as much as the blood and fortune we spent when we liberated France was worth it.
I just pray that the KRG and Peshmerga can keep these lunatics out of their relatively peaceful territory and my friends there stay safe. Mosul is dangerously close to Iraqi Kurdistan.
Only until the media and the rats figure out how to blame it on a Republican.
Well this is special...
Iraq confirms helicopters on ground in Nineveh are in the hands of ISIS. these pic.twitter.com/ruaYngb8x1
I saw recently Iraq is getting some F16 fighters. I guess al Qeada has pilots?
Actually, you’re right...PKK (Kurdistan Worker’s Party) is a Marxist/Leninist group.
Ocalan, the currently-jailed leader, once referred to himself as “...the Lenin of the 21st Century.”
The best argument I knew of at the time was that Saddam was trying to acquire nuclear weapons. There were experts (including Clintonistas) who believed that was a real likelihood. That may be part of the reason the Left put so much emphasis on the whole Valerie Plame/Joe Wilson dog and pony show. Of course there is no way now to know if Saddam would have succeeded.
The army guys who ran were probably Sunnis who didn’t want to fight fellow Sunnis. Putting in Shiite forces might fix that, but might start a civil war.
