Google will buy the micro-satellite startup Skybox Imaging for $500 million, the company announced today.
While the deal isnt yet closed, its a big moment. I mean, Google owns satellites now! And the deal falls into a pattern weve seen so far in 2014, of big companies chasing the next wave of revenue, by entering new markets through acquisitions.
Skybox, after all, is only one of many similar small-satellite startups. Google seems to have long been hankering for a small satellite manufacturer. The two are even both located in Mountain View, California.
But I think theres something more here, something that makes Googles purchase of Skybox different than any old Silicon Valley acquisition. Skybox isnt just a plain-old satellite company, or even a plain-old satellite startup. Googles purchase might signal a new producta new area of sincere competitionfor the webs primo ad monger.
