After six years in the House and nearly 36 in the Senate, it was time for Cochran to fold 'em. It wasn't so much because of ageplenty of 76-year-olds have continued to serve effectively in Congress. The second rap on Cochranthat "he's been in Washington too long"gets a little closer to the mark. It's not so much that he has literally been serving in Congress too long but that the Republican Party, particularly in the South, has changed under his feet, and he seemed largely unaware of and ill-equipped to deal with that change.
Cochran and other Southern Republicans of a certain age and time were certainly conservative, but they didn't carry the scars of various civil- and voting-rights Senate battles. They were conservative without the harder edge and more acerbic rhetoric that many conservatives and Republicans today prefer, particularly those in the South, in small towns and rural areas as well as the exurbs. These politicians don't just prefer red meat. They go for very rare or (better still) raw meatsomething that's pretty alien to a more genteel generation of Southern Republicans.

You don't need the hard edge of a Ted Cruz or a Mike Lee to be effective, but it certainly doesn't hurt when you are battling with Marxist Democrats who would make a George McGovern or a Fritz Mondale look conservative.
TC needs to go not because he's a bad person, but because he's ineffective.
“The second rap on Cochranthat “he’s been in Washington too long”gets a little closer to the mark.”
The fact that he has to rent a room in one of his aide’s houses to maintain “residency” in Mississippi ought to be enough to convince Mississippians that Cochran represents DC, not Mississippi.
The operative term being "were" - his American Conservative Union rating for last year was an underwhelming 60%.
This is the takeaway line. Although Charlie always like to give himself a little wiggle room, this sentence is telling us that he knows the numbers and that the numbers mean that Cochran is gone. I've known Charlie for 49 years.
Mississippi river boat gambler’s ping!!
Cautious optimism—But keep making phone calls and knocking on doors.
Did this clown ever hear of Jesse Helms?
Not sure about you SCP, but I find it hard to believe that this was posted on FR.
BTW, Eric Cantor just got shown the door!
Yea Vigilanteman, Ted Cruz "needs to go"...NOT!!!
Ineffective? What the samhill are you smoking?
Did you read the article?
See post #10. Since Thad Cochrane was the topic of the article and Ted Cruz wasn’t even mentioned, I didn’t think the intent of my post would be so twisted. I was wrong.
I’m pretty sure that Vigilenteman was talking about Thad Cochran (TC).
I hope the defeat of GOPe RINO Eric Cantor, in Virginia, ignites the Tea Party and true Conservatives in Mississippi even more than before tonight, and that it takes wind out of the sails of the Cochran supporters.
Any Republican candidate who begs for Democrat votes in a Republican primary needs to go.
*houeto walks away with head hung down in shame*
