DENVER - Thousands of potential FAA air traffic control trainees, with College Initiative Training (CTI) degrees or previous military experience, have been told by the federal agency they are no longer eligible for job interviews. Instead, the FAA has decided to accept less qualified applicants, apparently to satisfy concerns that the agency needs a more diverse workforce.
"We were told through the FAA, if you want to be a controller you need to go through one of our CTI-approved programs," said CTI graduate Ryan Meryhew.
In the past, Ryan Meryhew would have been considered "highly qualified" for the FAA's air traffic control program, and like veterans who had military traffic control experience, he would have been given preference in the hiring process.
But suddenly, earlier this year, thousands of students like Ryan were told they were no longer eligible to proceed with the application process.
No one that the CALL7 Investigators spoke with about the hiring changes knew why the FAA set aside those who were proven to be successful in favor of taking a chance on hires off the street.
"I believe that the FAA's motivation is to gain more diversity in the hiring pool," said Kuhlmann. "But they won't say it in that way. They will not say it. Even on the teleconference. They'll just say, 'We've engineered the biographical questionnaire in a way that we think will promote diversity.'"
However, if that is the case, a 2013 FAA report contradicts that position by stating, "It is clear that the 36 academic institutions helped introduce the air traffic control profession to minorities who may have not been familiar with jobs and opportunities that the field of aviation represents."

Because the thing that really matters, in a position that is entirely confined to a voice on a radio, is the color of their skin, not any actual ability to do the job.
And the reason they’re not outright saying they made the change to enhance “diversity” is because when the inevitable mistake occurs, there won’t be anyone on record saying that they valued skin color higher than actual ability, so the policy won’t bite any of the “higher-ups” who created and promulgated the policy, and will instead bite the hiring agents and the managers who selected the candidates for hiring poor controllers (as if the requirement constraints didn’t all but dictate that they hire less qualified candidates).
I’m glad I do not fly within the US any longer.
Isn’t English the universal language of air traffic control? I guess they’ll be changing that to ebonics soon.
Probably selecting out veterans with real-world military air traffic control experience.

Spoke with am air traffic controller friend on this and, yes, it is what you think it is - more stupidity from the Obama admin, for the most part, although I believe my friend said that this push actually started during the Bush years but it has been co-opted by Obama Marxists.

I was a USAF controller for 20 years. I saw these FAA minority hiring programs back in the 70s. I did not like it then, I don’t like it now, but that is the kind of government we have.

As I am sure you know, intelligence only has a certain affect on it, but bring a good air traffic controller, and being smart, do not always go together. I also helped “bounce” people out of the career field. We called it “washing out”. Only a few times did I ever see the race/gender card played in ref to washing people out. My motivation, was because I thought these people were a hazard to air navigation. Let me also say, the best controller I ever saw, was a black female from Tennessee. That woman could flat out move some aircraft around the sky. Her husband was almost as good as she was too. The bottom line, if people could effectively control airplanes, I don’t care what color they were. I do not, however, like race based hiring practices, even if the government does.
Once they were doing it for medical schools, it was all over. I am overly impressed with white guys in any profession, because they must be from the top of the heap; if not, they’d have lost out to the tokens. On the flip side, I’m rarely impressed by any of the “preferred minorities”; they know why they are there, are aware of their inadequacy, and it effects performance.
