Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. Army sergeant captured in Afghanistan and held for nearly five years before being traded for five top Taliban operatives, was discharged from the Coast Guard before he joined the Army, Fox News confirmed.
An Army spokesman did not confirm reports that Bergdahl's discharge was due to psychological reasons or elaborate on the circumstances leading to his ouster in 2006.
"We did confirm that Bergdahl was administratively discharged from the USCG prior to his enlistment to the U.S. Army,” the spokesman said.

I think we can all agree that Bowe Bergdahl does not have the temperament for the military. His psyche eval should have culled him out in the beginning. Its incredible that he was discharged from the Coast Guard and then accepted into the Army.

The Coast Guard IS the military.
It is uncommon for the US Army to take anyone that has been kicked out of another service and especially for psychological reasons.
However, psychological reasons is one defense that we all predicted would come around.
What mitigates against it is that Bergdahl sent all his possessions home. That might testify to a planned suicide, but it doesn’t excuse going over to the enemy and deserting your post.
The Taliban must be glad they got rid of this nutcase, and laughing at the White Hut over the deal.

It ain't easy. The services are very exacting in regard to health issues, physical fitness (NO FATTIES!), drug use, any criminal record, education, etc.
Then they turn around and take a guy who was section 8-ed out of the Coasties? (Good for them, BTW)
HTF did that happen? As we type, I have the 19-year old son of a friend being rejected from the Navy because of a juvenile record (marijuana) since expunged. He is a fine young man, too.
The Coast Guard used to be very selective. I ran into a few years ago and all had one quality-brains. Obviously things have changed. Sadly, the military does not care about lifestyles anymore and that attracts some whackos.
Agree he doesn’t have temperament for military service. I can’t stop wondering why he enlisted in anything. What was he thinking?
