Cantor failed to secretly fund a Libertarian third candidate to confuse voters and split the vote.
In his district, with the way that he neglected to maintain a good relationship with his constituents, it may not have mattered. But having not tried at all to run a dark horse to dilute his opposition shows that he was never fit to lead the GOPe.

I agree with the basic sentiment, but I'd revise it to say: "Failed to have a minimum of 3 self-proclaimed conservatives saying nutty things and dividing the opposition vote." That is the way Boehner did it in Ohio 8, he had 3 opponents, one reasonable, and two prone to dumb comments. Lindsay Graham recruited (imho) SIX 'conservative' opponents.
The Rino Party divides and conquers....just as it's done the last 2 national elections, and as it will attempt to do to get Jeb Bush into the White House.
Someone suggests that in the presidential, that the leading conservative candidate become the candidate of the entire conservative movement. All other conservatives agree that they will drop support of other conservatives once that first conservative leaning state renders its judgment. IIRC, that means conservative candidates will have a number of debates, Iowa, and New Hampshire to make their case. South Carolina will be the deciding state.
