As the threat from Sunni militants in western Iraq escalated last month, Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki secretly asked the Obama administration to consider carrying out airstrikes against extremist staging areas, according to Iraqi and American officials.
But Iraq’s appeals for military assistance have so far been rebuffed by the White House, which has been reluctant to open a new chapter in a conflict that President Obama has insisted was closed when the United States withdrew the last of its forces from Iraq in 2011.
A spokeswoman for the National Security Council, Bernadette Meehan, declined to comment on Mr. Maliki’s requests and the administration’s response, saying in a statement, “We are not going to get into details of our diplomatic discussions, but the government of Iraq has made clear that they welcome our support” in combating the Islamic extremists.

something like 70% of the military deaths since the war was started are on Obama’s watch. Yet does the media care? Where are the death tickers? Where are the “Endless/End This War” and “War is not the Answer” bumper stickers?
We had troops in Japan and Europe for many decades after WW2. Iraq is a hugely important strategic ally in that region and we are giving it away after all that long fought work to get it stable again. This is disgusting.
Exactly, the Saudis have been playing the US for suckers for the past half century. The US military has been the foreign legion of the House of Saud for decades doing their bidding and keeping the Saudis’ arch enemies the Shiite Iranians at bay.
Even as they were doing this and the US was protecting their oil fields the Saudis were still sending the 911 hijackers out to attack America.
Now the US is backing the Saudis’ allies in Syria against Assad and at the same time funding the same forces who are today carving out a new Sunni nation out of the shell of Syria and Iraq. The US funds the Sunnis in Syria and opposes them in Iraq and they’re precisely the same bunch of people!
It’s the most insane schizophrenic foreign policy I have ever seen. Iran hasn’t been a threat to the US in a quarter of a century, Iran is a far more educated and tolerant society than Saudi Arabia ever could be. The Iranian population is much more favorably disposed toward the West than the Saudis are, Iran used to be the US’ best friend in the region.
But because the US government and political elite is in the pocket of the Saudi oil sheiks the US has steadfastly refused to reconcile with Iran.
Nixon could make peace with China, Reagan could make peace with the Soviet Union but apparently it’s impossible to make peace with Iran and instead the US kisses the ass of the Saudis who hate everything about America.
I simply cannot make head nor tail of this policy.

If ISIS gets control of Iraq, it’ll make Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge look like the Dalai Lama by comparison. Every Christian and Jew currently in that region had better exit now.

I think you’re correct by the strictest definition of care, but the truth is, Americans being murdered by Muslims fills him with deep satisfaction. The fact that he’s responsible fills him with pride.

The only reason the name was not all the tipoff needed is that decades had been spent creating the meme of political correctness and it has been so successfful that now anyone who admits to seeing the obvious is condemned as a racist, homophobe, whatever. The emperor actually is naked but no one is considered pure in heart now so anyone who sees it must be evil. The world is upside down and bass ackwards.
Of course they will do that, after all they have been successful at projecting the GOP as the party of racism which is like the pot calling the milk black.
And the left needs their collective nose rubbed in it, and good.
