Sessions makes case for ‘red state’ leader

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) argued Thursday that he can bring an end to disunity and disarray in the House by restoring "red state" priorities that his chief rival for majority leader, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), may be unwilling or unable to pursue.

Sessions emerged from a lunch with the Texas delegation strongly denying rumors that he was dropping out of the race and exuding confidence that he can beat McCarthy despite only having one week to campaign ahead of June 19 leadership elections.

“We several times have found ourselves tangled in our ability to get all of our team together. That is all I say, that is not blaming anybody. I will offer that I can bring us together,” he told reporters.

“The agenda moving forward needs to be a conservative agenda that we start with the core of our membership that we work to make everybody comfortable with what we are trying to accomplish,” he said. Sessions stopped short of saying McCarthy has been a bad whip when asked about embarrassing floor mishaps, such as over the farm bill and appropriations measures.

“If we are together then we understand what’s in the bills and why we have got to vote on it,” he said. “I’d get from a team perspective and I would start with a good solid conservative base.”

Sessions noted that Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), a favorite of Tea Party members in the House, has “pitched his support to me.”

“I am running for majority leader on an agenda that can bring us together and to start with an agenda that is more red-state oriented,” he said.

The top priority for Sessions will be passing a bill to beef up border security to stop the tide of illegal immigration.

Sessions was asked if he thinks McCarthy has it all but locked up, and Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas) jumped in.

"Eric Cantor thought he had it locked up too back in his own district," Weber said.

“That is perhaps a good point,” Sessions said.

Pete Sessions is better because he will lose a primary over amnesty. His state is being invaded. Ralph Hall lost to hardliner Ratcliffe, who seems like Kobach.

The incumbent RINOs in California are facing no primary challengers and getting away with it.

Tancredo and Steve King backed Mike Pence as the better choice over Boehner in 2007.

Right now King doesn’t think they should have the vote.

Sessions over McCarthy, but too bad they couldn’t get anybody even more conservative. Whoever the “conservative” coalition picks to take on leadership/e-GOP better do it QUICK because they don’t have much time to wrangle up support!!

Who cares the color of his state if he’s pro-amnesty?

Blech.

Give me the real wolf, personally, not the one sheep clothing, parading around as if he’s a pal.

Red state. Pete has been no friend to Cruz, but doesn’t seem to mind borrowing the phrase and the red state thesis that I believe Cruz was the first to point out. Certainly Pete is not he originator.

Think Cornyn, here.

AKA - not shocking at all. Petey Sessions is a Texas sized RINO. He’s a mini Cornyn. DO NOT ACCEPT HIM AS LEADER!

“Sessions over McCarthy, but too bad they couldn’t get anybody even more conservative.”

These are two turds in the same punchbowl. We need someone like Gowdy, not either of these two amnesty supporters!

If it is McCarthy or Sessions it is easily Sessions.

The amnesty supporters like Denham and Nunes are for McCarthy. Nunes said Bachmann and King are not conservative.

IF Joe Heck and Amodei(NV) are for McCarthy that is another bad sign.

McCarthy and Gowdy will never lose a primary. It is a good thing that it was Cantor before McCarthy.

Jim Jordan in theory could lose a primary one day if he decided to sell out.

Gowdy is the same as Sessions on amnesty. Except Sessions can be Cantorized.
