Obama: ‘The best hammer doesn’t mean every problem is a nail’
al jazeera ^ | 28 May 2014 | To many to list

Posted on 06/12/2014 7:30:14 PM PDT by Red6

As the commencement speaker at West Point, President Barack Obama told the 1,000 cadets in their dress uniforms that the U.S. must always lead on the world stage and the military is the backbone of that leadership.

But "U.S. military action cannot be the only or even primary component of our leadership in every instance," said Obama.

"Just because we have the best hammer does not mean that every problem is a nail."

Though United States forces are out of Iraq and leaving Afghanistan, the president emphasized that the lessons of Sept. 11 are still with us and terrorism remains the No. 1 threat.

Obama announced he'll ask Congress for $5 billion to create a Counterterrorism Partnership Fund. He said the fund would pay to train forces fighting Al-Qaeda in Yemen, support peacekeeping in Somalia and Libya and assist French operations in Mali.

Next week the president will make a trip to Europe to bolster ties and move public opinion in his direction as it pertains to foreign policy.

The president claims to be presenting a third path between isolationism and interventionism with a more soft-power-based, multilateral approach. Is this accurate? And is it the right policy?

We consulted a panel of experts for the Inside Story.

Obama uses the hammer and nail cliche-

OK, there might be some truth to that!

To a soldier, every nail needs hammered.

To an engineer, the nail needs made lighter and stronger.

To the business man, a nail is a way to make money and has a supply and demand curve.

To the lawyer, all the nail manufacturers need sued.

To the teacher, a nail is something that needs explained to others.

To the police man, a nail is something that can be used as a weapon, or to puncture tires...

But what about a community organizer that went to law school, built his career on race baiting and provincial politics, how does he see a nail? The answer which tipped his hand and told what he is all about can be found in the Beer Summit.

I hate it when Obama pretends to sound like an American.

When the only tool you have is a hammer you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

Or something.

OMG you're reading my mind. We have a friend who is Vietnamese -- as a child he was, literally, one of the last to escape Saigon -- and his English, while good, has always had ... "anomalies."

When I saw this quote, I immediately thought "this is how someone who learned English later in life would say it."

Obama is NOT an American. Not by culture, not by belief, not by sentiment... and almost certainly not by birth.

Obama the hammer:

He thinks he is a powerful tool, but he is only full of hot air!

Community organizers get away with cliches because their audience confuses them with wisdom.

He’s not an American, so what would he know about American idioms?

The real saying is “If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” He tortured that to pieces.

This was meant as a slight to the crowd: “Just because we have the best hammer does not mean that every problem is a nail.”

In the same straw man vane as, from the Romney debate: “We don’t fight with bayonets anymore, we have these things called aircraft carriers.”
