At the heart of the terrifying meltdown in Iraq is the centuries-old hatred between two Muslim ideologies: Sunni and Shia. The deadly power struggle between these two rival versions of the same faith has flared into life as Sunnis in the extremist terror group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) advance on Baghdad, where flailing prime minister Nouri al-Maliki - who is Shia - begged his parliament to declare a state of emergency. It is a battle being watched with trepidation throughout the Middle East, where the escalation of the traditional Sunni/Shia conflict threatens governments and national borders. Already, ISIS has effectively established its own nation state - or Islamic caliphate - which spreads across the north of Syria and Iraq, taking no heed of the border between the countries.

This guy only partly gets it - the new extremists on both sides hate the moderates within their own sects as well. Also if convenient they will fight on the same side if it is disposed to hating Israel or the West. It is never simple but what is certain is that the meddling in the last few years by Obama but also Bush’s taking over Iraq rather than just going for Al Qaeda in Afghanistan has helped bring the Middle East to the point of catastrophe! Whether it is rescue-able who knows and if it wasn’t for Israel I would say who cares!
Ancient psychosis is more like it.
They seem to be having the kind of struggles we had with the Protestant Reformation, 30 Years War, and all that nasty stuff. Does anyone have some idea how many Christian lives were lost with that stupidity. Thank “God” our founding fathers had the good sense to keep religion out of the Constitution, except to provide for freedom of religious choice, and no religious oaths to hold office. I know there are those who are pushing to put more religion into government, but let this be a modern warning.
The only religion that will be pushing its way into government is Islam.
It had already flared into life in the Iraq-Iran war. We were fools to get involved and should have let them destroy each other. It's one time I agree with Colin Powell who told Bush 41 re: invading Iraq: "If we break it we own it." It disgusts me to think of the American lives and treasure expended on this medieval shithole we're gifting to al quaeda. America will pay a terrible price.
Are the Islamists good petroleum engineers? If they take over the Middle East, the West should just bomb the oil fields. Let the little terrorists figure out how the get the oil flowing.
With all the cracking in the West, there will be enough oil to supply the West. The Arabs can go back to humping camels.
Still ongoing in the religion forum - (it’s why I never post there)- in the end even those who used religion to justify the Christian wars had to admit it was against their founder’s statements. Islam on the other hand is now living out it’s creators orders.
The whole thing is about World Domination...The tribal thing is just “groupies”. All these Muzzie tribes agree “Kill All the Christians and Jews” aka dogs.
It is rescuable. Convert everyone to the ancient church of the east, the assyrian/ chaldean catholic church. And it is worth rescuing as the font of civilisation and the birtholace of Abram
I wish I shared your optimism - yes it will take conversion as this evil religion they follow is dragging them down!
