CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) - President Barack Obama on Friday became only the third U.S. sitting president in eight decades to set foot in Indian Country, encountering both the wonder of Native American culture and the struggle of tribal life on a breeze-whipped afternoon in the prairie. Amid snapping flags and colorful, befeathered dancers, Obama declared that there was more the U.S. could do to help Native Americans.

I've heard the term "only the third US sitting President in 8 decades " probably 6 times today. Who were the other 2, and when?

Obama declared that there was more the U.S. could do to help Native Americans

Gee, Really?

You mean like....

Not importing tens of millions of Central and South Americans illegally to compete with them?

Used to be that Navajos could get blue collar jobs in places like Flagstaff, Gallup, Albuquerque, even Salt Lake. Forget it! It's now 100% Mexican.

Or how 'bout not outsourcing tens of millions of jobs to China that could have been located on the Rez? Seen any toasters being manufactured in Kayenta, you dirtbag racist bigot you Mr. Obama?

This is really hilarious. This clown runs out to Injun country to do a sob fest about righting the wrongs inflicted by the Evil Palefaces?

How bout owning up to the unrelenting damage to tribal livelihoods that you inflicted Mr. Obama because the people you DID send the jobs to....weren't white. And they are foreigners. Who you favor over us Palefaces, AND the Indians.

BTW....ask the Apache how they feel about Mexicans becoming the majority in places like Southern Arizona and New Mexico.

From the people who sent Mexican Army officers off cliffs tied to burning wagons, you might get a surprising answer, dimbulb.

For starters — close the reservations and dismantle the Native American “nations.”

A full assimilation is LONG overdue.

He does not need to try and get any Democrat votes on any Reservation. Take it from me (a true American Indian) all most all tribes are Democrat voters ,I’d say up to 90% or even more. My tribe is pretty typical and stand right around the 90% bracket.

It would be interesting to see a breakdown on the millions upon millions of dollars given to the Native Indians over the 100 plus years. Its like a sink hole; the money goes to the Indian organizations and leaders and, like a sink hole, it disappears and there in nothing to show for it.

But Barack and Michelle understand their struggles -

“They talked about the challenges of living in two worlds of being both native and American,” Obama said, an echo of his own observations in the past about being the son of a Kenyan father growing up in a white society.

“Some bright young people like the ones we met today might look around them and sometimes wonder if the United States really is thinking about them, caring about them and has a place for them, too,” he said. “I said, you know, Michelle and I know what it feels like sometimes to go through tough times. We grew up at times feeling like we were on the outside looking in.”

As he entertained the crowd before Obama’s arrival on the powwow ground, master of ceremonies Anthony Bobtail Bear Sr. raised a hot-button issue in both the nation’s capital and among Native Americans - the name of the city’s professional football team.

“How many of you like the Washington Redskins?” he asked Obama’s entourage. “Eeeeehhhh. Kill ‘em off right away.”

True that, Hawk, about the Democrats.

My hometown Rez votes better than 90 percent democrat but we have bigtime oil now and voting isn’t exactly the priority now.

I do disagree with you about the Cobell settlement. The BIA was staffed and directed by tribal members when all that money went a-missing.

In other words taxpayer dollars were allocated to the BIA, the BIA dispersed it at the federal and tribal level, and the money disappeared.

Then individuals (including Mrs. Cobell) sued for return of all the missing millions and when they won the taxpayers got to pony up again.

Worst of it all is that the tribal members in my area got like, what, $2,000 tops? Tribal bigwigs and lawyers took far and away most of the loot, as always.

Haven’t seen you around lately FH...good to find you here.

Yes. If you look at county-by-county electoral maps, and see blue patchs in areas of the Western US where there are no big cities, those patches are usually reservations.

According to one source, FDR visited the Cherokee reservation in North Carolina in 1934 and Clinton visited the Pine Ridge reservation in North Dakota in 1999. If they would have gone back 9 decades, they would have had to mention that Calvin Coolidge visited the Sioux reservation in South Dakota in 1927, where he was adopted into the Sioux Nation. But it just wouldn’t do to acknowledge that the first sitting President to visit an Indian reservation was Republican. It wouldn’t fit the meme.

Many Native Americans are in the condition they are precisely because of all that government “help” over the years. The more government decides to help some group the more likely that group will become dependent and helpless.

Please do not help us Mr. President. Being a Native American is already fraught with difficulty. Please do not send your help we cannot survive it. Our people were once proud, independent and well educated, (as Cherokee, we even had a written language) yet wave after wave of white government help has taken our pride, we have become children in our eyes as well as yours. Please we have suffered enough.

B.S. I was born feet from the Menomonee "Reservation" in Wisconsin...there are a whole lot of people who understand what goes on in these enclaves...the reservation was turned into Menomonee County for a period of time and then reverted to a reservation...I'm not certain of that history but the sooner that reservations are done away with, the better!!!!!

Please educate us about reservation life. I am not being flippant in asking. I admit to knowing nothing about reservation life. I know that there are some reservations in which people live in poverty, but I don’t know why this is. I don’t know if tribes have tried different types of economic development aside from casinos.

I would appreciate any insight you can give to us. Thanks.
