Slap in face for David Cameron as Angela Merkel backs Jean-Claude Juncker as European president

David Cameron was humiliated as Angela Merkel slapped down his bid to block Jean-Claude Juncker from Europe’s top job.

The German Chancellor dismissed Mr Cameron’s “threat” that Britain could leave the EU if arch-federalist Mr Juncker becomes president of the European Commission.

“I am for Jean-Claude Juncker ,” a defiant Mrs Merkel said at a summit of European leaders in Sweden.

As Mr Cameron looked on, she added: “We act in a European spirit. Threats are not part and parcel of that spirit. That’s not how we usually proceed.”

Her words represent a major setback for the Tory PM, who had hoped to build support for his opposition to the appointment of Mr Juncker at the four-way summit in Harpsund.

Mr Cameron was left isolated as Swedish PM Fredrik Reinfeldt and Dutch PM Mark Rutte made clear that discussions over next the Commission president had not even been top of the agenda.

Diminished France Loses Influence in Europe
An array of diplomats and officials involved in EU policymaking told Reuters France's influence, sapped by its persistent economic problems, has been hit further by the election, in which the Socialists came a distant third behind Marine Le Pen's far-right and the opposition conservatives.

"Hollande is a devalued currency," a former European affairs minister from one member state said. "If we need something, we go to the Germans. Before, we used to go to the French as a way of bringing the Germans around. Now France is mostly absent."

Mary Louisa Toynbee, known as Polly Toynbee (born 27 December 1946) is a British journalist and writer, and has been a columnist for The Guardian newspaper since 1998.

She is a social democrat and broadly supports the Labour Party, while urging it in many areas to be more left-wing. During the 2010 general election, she called for tactical voting to keep out the Conservatives with the hope that this would lead to a Lab-Lib coalition supporting proportional representation. Toynbee previously worked as social affairs editor for the BBC and also for The Independent newspaper. She is Vice President of the British Humanist Association, having previously served as its President between 2007 and 2012. She was also named “Columnist of the Year” at the 2007 British Press Awards. …

Whether one agrees or not, Juncker is honest with his statement about protecting financial markets at a critical moment from collapse and devastating people’s wealth.

Unlike many other politician’s breathtaking mendacity and paying down the debt.

Got a Star Trek video for that?

You just blew up Norman again. Calling Juncker honest is a paradox in and of itself. Markets can’t be “protected” from the ravages of “social(ist)” anything; only way to keep markets viable is for them to be free.

Right, didn't think so...

Maybe you can convince the UK about free markets, they seem to have other ideas.

I’d sure like to. They’re still lost in a world of Labour thinking. Juncker of course will only bring more of that particular mentality to the continent, the only difference between him and others vying for that precious appointed position is his being candid (rather than honest) about his intentions.
