Iraqi security forces readied a counter-offensive against militants north of Baghdad on Saturday, an army colonel said, after the prime minister announced the cabinet granted him "unlimited powers."

The colonel from the military command responsible for Samarra, a city 110 kilometres (70 miles) north of the capital, said reinforcements from the federal police and army arrived on Friday.

The officer said the reinforcements were for a drive against areas north of the city, including Dur and Tikrit, that militants seized in a spectacular assault this week.

Security forces were awaiting orders to begin, the colonel said.

IMHO, it is all up to the Iraqis now. We won them their freedom. If they can’t keep it they deserve to lives as slaves to the Iranians.

In honor of their fallen colleagues, Iraqi military and police forces need to line the roadways with the headless corpses of ISIS.

In this never-never land we now live in, who but Iran can step up and put an end to the maniacs we trained and armed?

Iraqi army training.....

“Now, when the enemy approaches, first drop your weapons, then take off your uniform (you have likely soiled it anyway), and RUN as fast as you can away from the enemy”.

IMHO Iraq is de facto partitioned into Kurdish, Sunni and Shia regions already.

The same is true of Syria. Assad has lost the Kurdish and new Sunni region that extends into what was Iraq.

The video of the Iraqi army showed soldiers actually aiming their weapons as they fired them. The enemy was literally shooting from the hip.

There is no such thing animal as an “Iraqi” - there is no “National” interests in that area - and no one trust the other tribe across the river....this is no more developed mentally or ideology sound than it was 1400 yrs ago. Take away the cars and cell phones - and it would look exactly like it did when Alexander the Great march through that part of the world.

I wrote a book that more main streamers ignored explaining all this - I guess it wasn’t dumbed down enough for their taste:

Reminds me of Squadron Officer School lo these many moons: they stuck us with people we didn’t know and in whom we had no spiritual or emotional investment, and expect us to be an instant family. “Forced camaraderie” doesn’t create true loyalty.

Do Iraqi army uniforms have brown pants? Will we be able to buy used Iraqi rifles that were never fired only dropped? Do their tanks have 5 speed transmissions, 4 reverse and one forward? Where have I heard this all before? Oh, its not PC anymore?

Iraqi army training.....

Certainly, cowardice played a part in the Iraqi collapse. But I'll bet political and religious considerations played a big part as well.

Suppose you are an Iraqi soldier. And you are Sunni. You wouldn't have a whole lot of motivation to risk your life for the corrupt Shia government in Baghdad.

Yes. In fact what is happening is the Middle East, particularly Iraq and Iran are devolving into the separate tribal regions they were before the British and French recast them during and after the First World War as the Ottoman Empire finally dissolved. National boundaries were drawn by the French and British without regard to tribal or religious forces in place.

Going to be a bigger mess than ever and we need to steer clear.
