Germany’s president says his compatriots shouldn’t always reject deploying the military to help resolve conflicts...

Except that the German military is a hollow shell of its former self, and probably couldn't deploy anywhere without U.S. support. Just like the rest of NATO.

I'm surprised they never built up their military in such a hostile world. They must depend on on.

Germany’s current defense minister was a housewife in Palo Alto for a number of years. Her top priority is improving day care for the children of German soldiers.

Wasn’t it illegal for Germany to build up its military for a certain amount of time after the war?

Exactly four years. Other than that, she’s been a college professor and an assistant doctor; she’s been in politics since 1990. Doesn’t stop her from being a war hawk though.

You don’t seem to know their background. In spite of that, they have had the most foreign military deployments in the world behind the USA, for quite a few years.

They don’t (or didn’t) openly speak of war for the same reason Japan’s got that pacifist constitution.

You would prefer the German military to be as it was in 1939?

The Bundeswehr is second only to the US in terms of foreign military deployments. They’ve been in Afghanistan for ages and they’ll be there after Obama surrenders the “war of necessity”.

Concurring bump. I suspect NATO has become an overly expensive European gentleman's club, with the United States picking up the tab.
