WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel ordered an aircraft carrier moved into the Gulf on Saturday, readying it in case Washington decides to pursue a military option after insurgents overwhelmed a string of Iraqi cities this week and threatened Baghdad.

If the Iraqi air force could evacuate people, why aren’t they fighting?

Because their planes point in the direction away from the battle.

Isn’t this a little late? I just finished watching “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit”. Tom Clancy wrote the book, based on the settled fact that there are government organizations whose goal it is to watch over and protect the United States. Have all these organizations been neutralized? With what is going on, it seems no one is minding the store.

Can’t answer that question, but at least they are willing to help evacuate our contractors out of Balad which is a heck of a lot more than our own Air Force is permitted to do at this time, thanks to orders from BO to stand down.

It’s a good thing Barry Soetoro left Rimshot Joe Biden and Transgender Chuckie Hagel in charge while he’s off fundraising out in Cauliphonya. This Iraq thing could become semi-serious. LOL!

I tend to agree but wonder if the stolen surface to air missiles stolen at Benghazi are not lingering in wait somewhere.

That's a question for somebody who knows what they're talking about.

I would suspect, though, that MANPADS are a far more serious threat to a helicopter than they are to an F/A-18.

Gallup tracked him at -13 today after being as high as -1 earlier in the week. VA hurt him with that fickle 10-15% of electorate; Bergdahl may actually have helped him; ISIS is really hurting him. So he pulls the gunboat diplomacy card out. It might work until gas prices hit $4.

It would be a token strike or series because soetoro’s an islamist who thinks his brothers are doing pretty well about now. Anything to give Netanyahu conniptions.

Huffpo is celebrating potential alliance with Iran to fight ISIS. That ‘ll put the gulf states and Saudi in play for sure.

Wouldn’t surprise me if we’re running bombing missions not long after the Bush gets there.

The “Bush” being sent in. Obama gets his distraction with a bombing campaign and attaches the Bush name to it.

You can’t make this stuff up.

Gas in Pennsylvania has been hovering around four dollars for almost a year...it has not been down to even $3.50 for a couple years here...

Obama is EVIL to this Nation, he should have been impeached already..if he were Republican he would be gone...

I’m not sure if this is analogous, but we might compare it to Syria. Assad is Alewite (Shiite sect) and much of the Syrian Army Officer core is Alewite or Shiite. The lower levels are populated with Sunni conscripts. After all, they can’t risk a high ranking Sunni commander mounting a coup, ordering an artillery strike on friendlys, going rogue with a tank, defecting with a $20 million dollar mig aircraft or worse dropping a bomb on Assad’s palace.

It’s particularly bad in Syria as Alewites (Assad) and Shiites are the minority. Assad lost much of his infantry, because it was largely populated with Sunni’s. That’s why you see a lot of video of tanks that are unsupported by infantry racing into urban areas to take pot shots and promptly rolling out. Assad can’t take and hold a gain without infantry.

The Iraqi army is probably populated with a lot of Sunni’s who’s loyalty is highly suspect. That strife might only simmer if the army’s actions are defensive. Furlough the Sunni’s soldiers and there is a very real risk they might show up as rebels. Maybe president Maliki fear mass defections if he mounts an offensive against Sunni areas. Even if they don’t defect the Sunni’s within the Iraqi forces could reek absolute havoc via sabotage.

All just speculation.

Sorry , we’ve been mostly in the 3.50-3.60 range for years here in mid Atlantic ( for regular); never into the 3.70’s if you shop.
