Discussing House Majority Leader Eric Cantors surprising primary loss, on Fridays Washington Week on PBS, John Harwood, chief Washington correspondent for CNBC, a regular on NBC and MSNBC, and a political writer for the New York Times, blamed hostility to Jews in Cantors very rural conservative southern district.
Eric Cantor is a Jewish Republican. This is a very rural conservative southern district where that is not a -- you dont have a lot of Jewish members of Congress from the South.
Host Gwen Ifill, hardly a conservative, jumped in to counter Harwoods presumption: Oh, but hes been elected several times from this district.
Commentators on Fox were also rushing to explain it, “It wasn’t immigration. Certainly NOT immigration.”
When it was... immigration.
Pro-amnesty = death of Republican party = death of this country. All of America will look like Detroit in 30 years.
Pff. I didn’t even know he was Jewish till after he lost.
Must be behind the times here, as I had no idea he was Jewish.
If that’s the excuse they’re going with, then it’s just another reason to NOT trust the Boehner Status-Quo GOP.
BWAH! Conservatives are already racists and homophobes; might as well just add anti-semitic to the list. The libs are pitiful in their ignorance of who we are.
Shumer is doomed.....
Electing someone to state office repeatedly, and then Congress for 6 times, and then voting him out on the 7th because he is a Jew, is an old anti-Jew tradition.
But yet he was elected several times, 6 I believe. Before that he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 73rd district for like 10 years or so. I guess they finally realized he was Jewish. OMG
Even Gwen Ifill, the host, said that theory of right wing Jew Haters was bunk. Remember Gwen? In the closing weeks of the 2008 campaign, certain magazine and book publishers had begun printing up favorable biographies on Obama as the first Black President, they were that sure he would be elected. Gwen was one of the moderators on a Presidential Candidate Debate. Many in the GOP campaign said there was no way Gwen Ifill should be sitting as a debate moderator after she had released this coffee table tribute book to honor Obama. But of course McCain told all objectors to ‘stop the hate’ and play nice. We see how that worked out.
I can’t decide if these people are stupid or delusional.
I knew that was coming, bastards.
“Host Gwen Ifill, hardly a consrvative, jumped in to counter Harwoods presumption: ‘Oh, but hes been elected several times from this district.’”
When an idiot like Ifill has to force feed to Harwood the logic that, if these Southern hayseeds are so anti-Jewish, why did they elect the weasel 7 times before throwing him out, then you have to know Harwood is not exactly a critical thinker. But, then, the article says that Harwood is "a regular on NBC and MSNBC, and a political writer for the New York Times," so mystery solved.
“Anti-Semitism”Creatively Applied by The LEFT???
For an insight as to how Conservative Southerners view Jews in politics, remember that the number three man in the Confederate Government was Judah P. Benjamin, who had been a Jewish Senator from Louisiana. He was one of the two Jewish Senators at the time of secession, both from the Old South.
The South from Jefferson's time, at least, on, was always the most tolerant region of the United States.
Those who hate traditional Conservative values, have long projected their own intolerance to Conservatives. But for anyone to truly believe their lies, one must be delusional.
For what is really involved in the constant efforts to smear the South, see Creating Hate In America Today.
“Pff. I didnt even know he was Jewish till after he lost.”
Neither did I.
Hey, dickweed, didn’t even know he was Jewish.
Sounds like Big John is worried about the Jewish vote.
Needs to drum up a little hatred to keep the Jews on the Dem Plantation.
Then the left’s bigotry must be why they try their darndest to run anyone except a white heterosexual (normal) male. They think their “paint by numbers” candidates must be untouchable.
They’re not ignorant-this is the continuation of demonising the right, whites, Christians, by use of blatant lies which are never countered in the media.
Neither-they’re eagerly evil.
I guess the people that elected him all those years had no idea he was Jewish and just found out. Geesh how dumb do they think we are.
Nor did I and I am a politics junkie; I followed his race perhaps more closely (and with more loathing) than any other.
As far as I'm concerned Jewishness would be his only redeeming quality.
Yeah, Harwood, those rural southern rednecks only re-elected Cantor six times. They mustn’t have known they’re anti-semitic till last week. Putz.
full spin/kabuki mode.
So he wasn’t a Jew when he got elected in the first place?
Yes stupidity can hurt..........
I guess they finally realized he was Jewish. OMG..................................... Yeah, and they may also find out that Republicans hated Jacob Javits, Goldwater and Henry Kissinger who were also joooz. s/
I knew a “cantor” was the person in a synagogue who leads the singing and chanting.
I assumed he was not Orthodox, which means I also assumed he was center-left, but I never tried to verify either assumption.
Over the last year, I came to understand that he was part and parcel of the GOP Amnesty Leadership.
His defeat was wonderful news.
Not that his absence will help.
The GOP Leadership will still stuff Amnesty down our threats, possibly before the November election, or absolutely after it.
John Harwood can no longer be taken seriously as a journalist, since he should have known that Americans proved in 2000 that they are not anti-Semitic when the majority of them voted for an Orthodox Jew, Joseph Lieberman, for vice president on the Democratic ticket that won the popular vote that year.
And in the year 2008, Americans proved that they are not racists when they elected Barack Obama to the presidency.
Anyone who accuses Americans of anti-Semitism or racism is not a journalist conveying the truth but instead a propagandist for the Democratic party — one who tries to alarm Jews and Blacks, two of the Democrats’ major voting blocks, that unless they run to the voting booths to vote for Democrats, their Republican opponents will recreate German concentration camps for American Jews and bring back black slavery.
John Harwood should be ashamed of himself and so should the newspapers and networks that purvey his lies.
Eric Cantor was Jewish 14 years ago and was elected to Congress.
Eric Cantor was Jewish 12 years ago, and was elected to Congress.
Eric Cantor was Jewish 10 years ago, and was elected to Congress.
Eric Cantor was Jewish 8 years ago and was elected to Congress.
Eric Cantor was Jewish 6 years ago and was elected to Congress.
Eric Cantor was Jewish 4 years ago and was elected to Congress.
Eric Cantor was Jewish 2 years ago and was elected to Congress.
Eric Cantor was Jewish and pushed illegal immigrant amnesty and was defeated in the primary.
He must have lost because he was Jewish.
YEAH, THEY ELECTED HIM TO SEVEN TERMS BECAUSE THEY ARE ANTI-SEMITES.
YOU WANNA SEE ANTI-SEMITISM? LOOK AT THE CLOWN’S TEAM AIDING THE TERRORIST HATERS OF ISRAEL: IRAN, IRAQ, LIBYA, EGYPT, and SYRIA.
Oh, really? Then who do they think voted for him in all the previous elections? It certainly wasn’t Democrats, and I don’t think there are enough liberal Republicans in his district to have put him over the top all those times before.
Ha Ha Harwood, you just go right ahead and believe that nonsense.
Liberals are hilarious.
I didn’t have the first clue that he was Jewish.OK then...to address the issue lets replace him with Charles Krauthammer.
IMO, they’re bigots who project their bigotry on others.
Harwood, G0 F yourself
“He must have lost because he was Jewish.”
Of course the media overlords know he wasn’t; they simply have to tarnish those who oppose him and the New World Order he represents...
“Cantor” is Latin for “singer.” The lead singer in the Catholic church is also called a “cantor.”
There is a Hebrew word as well but a lot of synagogues don’t use it.
Nonsense! Cantor defeated himself with his radical amnesty views. He blew a huge lead to an unknown because he turned his back to America.
No drumming is necessary when one side doesn’t compete.
I had five years of Latin in the 60’s, and I had completely forgotten that.
I may have “lost” my Latin, but I still remember my Goldwater Conservatism!
Eric Cantor is a Jewish Republican. This is a very rural conservative southern district where that is not a — you dont have a lot of Jewish members of Congress from the South.
I guess, then Cantor converted to Judaism in the past two years, since Republicans didn’t seem at all bothered by his religion in the past?
Thanks for pointing this out. Also, the only Jewish military cemetery outside of Israel is the Hebrew Confederate Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. It was established by the Hebrew Ladies Memorial Association of Richmond, and relied heavily on donations from the United Confederate Veterans.
Also I don’t see how Cantor’s district is very rural. I would propose land area is a good metric, although not perfect. A district might have a very large land area yet if 90% of the voters are urban you could call it an urban district.
Smallest CD (land area): NY 13 - Charlie Rangel D
Largest CD (land area): AK 1 - Don Young R
Some states leave water area unassigned.
Cantor’s district is 240th out of 435 - slightly larger (more rural) than the median but not by much.
As Southern Districts go (Old Confederacy plus Kentucky):
smallest district FL 24
largest district TX 23
Cantor’s district is 65th out of 144 - slightly smaller (less rural) than the median southern seat.
We’re talking about journalists here. If they see a church (other than Uniterian Universalist), they classify the entire district as rural.
Actually, just by your research, I would say his district was about as dead-center America as you can get, for a district - close enough to be near “the action” (i.e., DC in this case), yet still lots of farms, and everything else in between.
MCF is probably right - first elected in 2000.
Under the 2002-2010 lines it appears his district was 255th largest out of 435.
Among Southern Republican seats, 2014, he’s 35th out of 103....more urban than the median.
