Barack Obama traveled to a Native American reservation in North Dakota, his first visit as US president to "Indian Country," where he focused Friday on education and economic development.

The president, accompanied by First Lady Michelle Obama, visited the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe reservation in the central far northern state.

The Sioux, which include the Lakota and Dakota nations, are the people of Sitting Bull, the chief famous for his victory over the US cavalry in the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn. (AFP)

Native people are quick at spotting a phoney—They can sense when someone is speaking with a forked tounge.

From his wikipedia page:

Early life and education[edit]
Bergdahl was born on March 28, 1986, in Sun Valley, Idaho, to Jani (née Larson) and Robert “Bob” Bergdahl, a commercial truck driver.[1][6][7] Bergdahl has an older sister, Sky Albrecht,[1][8][9] and was home schooled by his mother in Hailey, Idaho. The family attended Sovereign Redeemer Presbyterian Church, an Orthodox Presbyterian Church. He received a GED certificate through the College of Southern Idaho in his early 20s.[6][10][11][12] As an adult, Bergdahl studied and practiced fencing and martial arts before switching to ballet classes at the Sun Valley Ballet School in Ketchum, Idaho.[6][10] He never owned a car; he rode his bicycle everywhere.[12] He spent time in a Buddhist monastery between 2007 and 2008.[13]

While there Obama should ask the Indians how their open door immigration policy worked out for them.

There is no greater proof of the utter failure of welfare states than American Indian reservations. The poorest county in America with the highest unemployment is Shannon County, SD, the Pine Ridge Indian reservation. While Native Americans can get free medical through the Indian Health Service, many shun their facilities which all too often provide inferior care. Native Americans have a saying that you never go to an IHS hospital at the end of the month because they have already burned through their monthly budget and you won't get care. The IHS makes the worst of the VA health care system look good.

Native American on many reservations live on the government dole and have no incentive whatsoever to be gainfully employed. Alcoholism and drug addiction, especially to meth, is endemic.

Some tribes are making big strides in improving things for tribal members often with casino revenues rather than government handouts. The Santee Band of Sioux in South Dakota and the Ojibwe people in northern Minnesota are good examples. I had the privilege of teaching at the Cass Lake tribal college in Minnesota for a semester and gained great respect for the tribe's efforts not only to provide a higher education opportunity for their members but to preserve their culture and language.
