Why I'll never go back to California

California is the embodiment of Margaret Thatcher’s famous quote, “The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” It is depressing that even with the evidence of years of repeated collectivist failure, people keep trying to make a communist silk purse out of a rotting sow’s ear.

Just keep this in mind if you decide to flee the socialist stench of California: Please remember why you left. Don’t Californicate your new home.

... back in ‘61,... California looked damned good to me at the time

It was good at the time. It was the best place in the world. Now it is a picture of the legacy of practicing Liberalism - rotten and festering.

Nine coastal counties (out of 58). That’s all that keeps Cali from being a conservative state.

My husband’s company pulled out of So California 5 years ago. Now we are in AZ. I really miss the beauty, the weather and friends in California......we were there for 2 decades. That being said, I doubt we would retire there. I could not afford to spend most of my Social Security on property taxes.

Young Canadians (under 40) in my experience, seem to be very radicalized. I’ve heard them spew anti-Americanism & anti-Western nonsense that would put the French to shame.

I’d agree with you but there is a big rural-urban divide… you will find far less ‘anti-American radicalization in the rural districts. In this regard, it isvery similar to the map showing the rural-urban split in the U.S. after the last couple of presidential elections (the blue is all concentrated around the major population areas). The electoral map for Ontario is shown in this article in the National Post. Very generally, almost all of Southern Ontario rural areas voted for the Conservatives and all the big cities including the Greater Toronto Area voted for the Liberals. http://news.nationalpost.com/2014/06/13/ontario-liberal-landslide-with-only-about-a-third-of-the-votes-is-a-powerful-new-argument-for-election-reform/

lived in Ct in the 80s and CA in early 2000s.

both are beautiful.

I think Ct won out as a family place.

We cannot judge the character of a place by beauty alone.

Live in Texas now. Is it beautiful? yes, in different ways.

Its beauty is not in just scenery but in the people and its law-abiding and God-fearing citizens.

This is where I die

Thought I had died and gone to heaven as we crossed the Bay Bridge in 1967 and drove down to Silicon Valley where we lived until 2002. Things were fine until about 1978.

We moved to southern Utah and established our business to take advantage of tourism. Zion National Park is 12 miles west of us so we see the traveling lefties every day. Thank heaven they don’t stay. In this small Long Valley we have about five hundred residents. Can’t say I have ever met a liberal among them.

The way that was fixed in NV was a box to check for “None of the above”. Which is kinda like tossing your vote away. Our choice for mayor upcoming is between a guy who wants to carry the current mayor’s mantle forward or a “Perky Progressive” young lady who owns a couple of local businesses. Oiks! Well, I certainly don’t want the “PP” so I guess I go with the good ‘ol boy. Pretty sad.

I weep when I red about what has become of Oakland.
A few years ago, before I curtailed my business traveling, I preferred to fly into Oakland and meet customers for lunch at Trader Vic's in Emeryville. Now it's gone...

Nothing quite like a fact-free post. Allow me to compensate for that: CA often wins among the States for the most donations to FreeRepublic.

I would live in CA only if I had no income that can be taxed and buy property. And I would live away from the cities as well. Like far Northern CA.

I’m in New England....I’ve met hundreds of Canadians living & working here over the years. Almost never hear the older folks talk about America like the younger generation. Most of the Canadians I know are from NB, NS & PEI & in general & they are quality people. I’m sure your urban crowd is like ours....

The most popular bumper sticker where I lived 40 years ago was “DON’T CALIFORNICATE COLORADO!”

Now it has been. First it was Oregon, then Washington, then Colorado, Now they are moving into my home state of New Mexico.

They foul their own nest, then move to a clean one and start to foul it, trying to make it a copy of the one they left.

Company I worked for before, the management went really downhill. One day, came to me, told me my position was eliminated and was given orders to move to the east coast and was required to sell my house - so no means to come back if the new job went downhill.

My husband and I lived in California (Oceanside, Bakersfield, Laguna Niguel) in the 80’s early 90’s. I liked it but wanted my children raised with positive Midwestern values. We moved back and I’ll never leave Kansas City unless I’m dragged out kicking and screaming.

There are still places of beauty in Ca, but home is home.
