Is President Obama done with Washington?
The 44th president has never been the capitals biggest fan, but his frustration with life in D.C. is bubbling to the surface in ways both casual and substantive.
The president twice went for unscheduled walkabouts last week, taking a trip to a Starbucks near the White House with his chief of staff Denis McDonough on Monday and, the next day, turning up at a burger joint in Alexandria, Va.
The bear is loose! is the presidents favorite phrase at such moments, and he deployed it again last week. Even the metaphor suggests a man straining at the leash after more than five years in the White House.
Yet there seems to be more to Obamas frustration than cabin fever.
Last Tuesday, Obama was asked about gun control during a question-and-answer session hosted by the social networking website Tumblr. He didnt try to assert that progress on legislation was realistically possible, instead launching into a personal broadside, permeated with a sense of resignation, against this town.
Referring back to the massacre in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, and the abortive push for new gun control regulations that followed, Obama said:
I have been in Washington for a while now and most things dont surprise me. The fact that 20 six-year-olds were gunned down in the most violent fashion possible and this town couldnt do anything about it was stunning to me.
Obama also declared that most members of Congress and I have to say to some degree this is bipartisan are terrified of the NRA, adding that, right now, its not even possible to get even the mildest restrictions through Congress. And we should be ashamed of that.
Hes at a point in his presidency where hes not running for anything ever again and feels very free to speak his mind, said Tommy Vietor, who served as a spokesman in the Obama White House and has been with the president since his Senate days.
He seems to care less and less whether he breaks a little china and I think thats great.
Hes never really made it a secret that hes not a fan of this place, concurred Jamal Simmons, a Democratic strategist. I think he finds the pettiness of this place annoying. People are focused on tactics not results, and he sees himself as a more results-oriented guy. Hes more willing to do things with a longer lens of history.
Obamas distaste for Washington has always had a political element, of course. Way back during his first run for the White House, he often invoked Washington as a symbol of business-as-usual ineffectiveness and stasis. It was also a place to which, not coincidentally, he could tie his chief opponent for the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton.
In late 2007, he told a crowd in Des Moines, Iowa, The real gamble in this election is playing the same Washington game with the same Washington players and expecting a different result. And thats a risk we cant take.
Nowadays, some observers wonder if even the most apparently superficial examples of his straining-against-the-leash, such as his downtown walkabouts, also serve a political purpose.
Breaking out of the confines of the White House, "reminds people of what they originally saw in him, said Democratic strategist Doug Thornell. I think theyre doing this because it reminds people what they like about him: his connection with folks on the campaign trail. Before he became president, he was an ordinary guy paying off his student loans who came out of nowhere.
But Obama also seems to savor interactions with civilians, people whom he sees as being part of the real world rather than the rarefied Washington sphere. He has been indulging tat impulse a little more lately, wishing people a happy fathers day and working a rope line on Friday before departing for a weekend in California.
During the weekend, he is doing some fundraising events, but will also be spending some downtime with the First Lady.
The Obamas have gone on numerous restaurant dates in DC, but they also seem to relish escaping the Beltway. In April, for example, they took in a Broadway performance of A Raisin in the Sun with family friend and advisor Valerie Jarrett.
The couple have also never sold their family home in Chicagos Hyde Park neighborhood, a fact that prompts speculation they will return there after his White House tenure ends.
Every president professes to miss the anonymity, and I think he really does, said Vietor.
One former senior administration official, who has worked with Obama since the 2008 campaign, says that the president seems to be feeling some kind of liberation at the moment.
Its not exactly a full Bulworth moment, but its freeing, the former official said. Its frustrating being in the bubble constantly, particularly for six or seven years. The official added that it was important to make sure he doesnt go stir-crazy, adding wryly, I would be.
But a different former senior administration official cautioned against reading too much into Obamas activities. The official, though, did not bother to argue that Obama enjoys the ways of Washington.
I think he has always liked getting outside the bubble, the source said. Obamas frustration with DC, he added, has been pretty steady.
"I didn't do it!"
"They won't let me do what I said!"
"It's them!" It's their politics!"
"I've been fighting for you from day one!"
It couldn't be that most members of Congress feel (rightly) constrained by the Constitution, and perhaps even responsive to their voters.
Pettiness? That's like the pot calling the kettle half black.
They shouldn’t be terrified of the NRA. The NRA doesn’t spy on them, the NSA DOES!
I was wondering when the tear filled tantrums would begin. Yes is all he’s ever heard and speaking in platitudes is all he’s ever had to do to achieve.
Then he went to Washington and even with a weak useless opposition party he couldn’t get rid of that damn Constitution and Bill of Rights. Roberts even tried to help.
More like, the pussy is loose.
I’m pretty sure Barack is cast as the DRAGON and not the bear.....
Let’s see. Iraq is falling apart. Putin is on the move in the Ukraine. At home, food prices are rising much faster than are personal incomes.
And Big Baby is all in a knot because life in DC is somehow making him uncomfortable.
“The fact that 20 six-year-olds were gunned down in the most violent fashion possible and this town couldnt do anything about it was stunning to me.
Open carry would clear that up real fast.
Narcissist In Chief.
One would hardly think of Obama as a “bear.”
Comparing him to a snake might be FAR more appropriate.
The “Bear” is loose?!
Ha ha. Maybe the “Ballerina” is loose.
Viral marketing of the presidency. “Look, I’m just like you!”
There are tales of kings walking amongst the commoners too.
Hmmmm, sees himself as a bear! In reality a paper tiger.
The Bear is loose? Puhlease! Bears are strong, aggressive, noble creatures. owebama exhibits none of those traits.
More accurate: The Weasel is loose.
Bam is just upset he hasn’t been able to create a big enough false flag to declare martial law yet. But I have great faith in him. He will start CWII before its all over.
That is a man who knows NOTHING about handling a dog.
What an astonishingly ignorant analysis!
. . . a "myopic lens" would be a more apt description.
Don’t bother me, I’m golfing here.
He just needs a bare hug.
I wouldn't call him a Bear.
He's more of an old Twink.
Did no one bother to train the dog to walk on a leash. Sheesh! Just like everything else these people do.. all half arse!
We have many laws on the books to make gun ownership responsible and safe...they are not enforced and that is what is shameful plus, your apparent lack of knowledge about those laws.
If I had a dollar for every time I’ve said that exact phrase.
He said we don’t want to use the same Washington players. Then he picks Biden for his veep.
I believe the only thing he likes about being president are the perks. And in the beginning his word was law. He’s never been able to handle anyone saying “no” to him. His own grandparents raised him using affirmative action.
It’s more likely the boy is loose and getting into mischief.
The Screw is loose.
Perhaps think of him as a Pansy?
He is frustrated that our nation is hanging on and has not yet been fully destroyed. The biggest regrets of his presidency will be that he could not institute Sharia Law, every citizen of Mexico is not living in California, Arizona, and Texas, and we still have left at least part of the Constitution.
responsive to their voters?
obammy care would not have passed were this the case.
Does anyone believe this fraud takes unplanned walks? It takes the SS days, or even weeks, to plan these little outings. I look forward to when he’s really “outed”.
You've got that right. It shouldn't be "The Bear is loose." It should be "The Self-Absorbed Baby is loose."
LOL! I understand what you mean....but I would not dishonor such a pretty flower of God’s creation in that way.
But it is a dog who knows how to handle a weak man.
Famous Amateur Golfer (FAG)
The Obama's are staying here. It is the same place Obama hosted the president of China last June. Sunnyland - The Anneburg Estate with it's own golf course.
What does the NRA have to do with the Newtown shooting...?
I know, it’s a rhetorical question...
So the Affirmative Action president wants to leave. Please do.
I guess the “I will not rest...” meme just made him tired.
Honestly, what an a-hole. Can't he even have the stomach to act presidential?
The Power Bottom is loose,he’s looking for a rough top.
More of an opossum than a bear.
” He is a results oriented guy.” What a load of bull. Obama could not manage the french fries at a McDonalds. He is so far removed from leading or managing anything that he can always be found screwing off. He is a total failure. Obama has no concept of an objective or goals to achieve it.
Yep. His tantrums sound more and more unhinged as his term draws to a close. If only he didn’t have Congress, and the Courts, he could achieve his Glorious and Revolutionary Vision. It’s funny how past Presidents and Governors every day get things done with the same setup.
