Russia threatens to cut off gas to Ukraine

Ukraine faces the threat of Russia cutting off gas supplies when a 06:00 GMT deadline passes on Monday after talks on a long-running gas pricing dispute failed.

Russian natural gas producer Gazprom said it was not extending the deadline for Ukraine to start paying off its gas debts after the discussions ended in the early hours of the morning in Kiev, raising the prospect of disruptions to gas flows to the European Union via Ukraine.

The breakdown of the talks is likely to increase political tensions that have mounted in the past few days between Kiev and Moscow as Ukrainian government forces clashed heavily with pro-Russian separatists in east Ukraine.

Reuters news agency reported that the latest in several rounds of talks ended at around 1:30am (22:30 GMT) despite a last-minute attempt by the EU's energy commission to secure a compromise. Moscow says Ukraine has a total of more than $4bn in gas debts and wants almost half that sum paid by 06:00 GMT.

"The Russian side is expecting payment of the accumulated gas debt of $1.951bn before 10am [06:00 GMT] on June 16," Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov said. "If the funds are not paid, gas supplies will, as was announced earlier, be switched to a pre-payment system."

Gazprom has refused to extend the deadline for Kiev to start paying off gas debt after the EU-brokered talks end without a deal.

Between this, and what is going on in Baghdad, Monday promises to be an "interesting" day.

All of this is happening around the world because we have a totally inept and weak President. Elections have consequences, all right.

If Russia cuts off the gas, Ukraine will just start stealing it from the transit lines bound for Europe again.

The New Russian Empire is being more subtle and coy in annexing Ukraine than it was in annexing part of Georgia and Crimea. The result will be the same.

“If Russia cuts off the gas, Ukraine will just start stealing it from the transit lines bound for Europe again.”

Russia will drop the volume pumped by Ukraine’s portion, and when the Ukes siphon it, the pressure for Europe will drop, leading to HUGE supply problems.

I fully expect Kiev to try and steal as much as they can. The question is, as pressures start falling in Europe, how long will they tolerate it??

Ukraine can be bypassed by the two northern streams, but it is the powerplants of Southern Europe that will be hit the hardest. They cannot afford any pressure drop. It causes huge problems.

Norway is already selling everything they can pump, and the UK was warning of electricity shortages this summer, just last week. And all of this without any cuts from Russia.

The Nazi thugs in Kiev want the US to give them some of our gas. I don’t want my gas bills to go up because the US and EU financed street demonstrations and an illegal coup. It’s not that I’m taking sides. I don’t want to take any side. Not my business. Don’t want US troops involved in this. I want aid money to Ukraine to stay in the US to service American concerns - jobs, infrastructure etc.

They ARE Nazi thugs. And, as Johnny Cash says, they can run on for a long time, but sooner or later...

Yes, but how can you be sure that Putin doesn’t work for the Rothschilds? They are crafty.

Just as Putin has a history of working with Communists. But our neo-Bolsheviks insist that he’s the “hero.”

Why won’t you pay Ukrainian bill and also compensate for a cancelled discounts on future sells? I think it could solve most of these problems.
If these guys wants their independence they should stop imitating a spoiled brat in parent’s basement.

Yeah, Putin does have a tendency to cut people’s gas off during the Summer. The Russians are humorous that way . . . you want to think that they understand the concept, but you are never sure.

German Media going nuts..

Just one hour to cutoff, and no sign of movement by either side. Merkel already said she won’t commit economic suicide over the gas issue.

I wonder what we’ll wake up to??

I don’t really blame Russia for wanting their money.

Russia could stop all flow through the pipelines and just sit back and watch the EU find the money to pay the gas bill.

I just hope we in the US don’t wind up paying the gas bill.

Ukraine have pumped gas in reservoirs beforehand and can last some months without problems. Problem is with gas for functioning transport system, price of question is circa 3-4 bln $$. Before that Ukrainian company Naftogas somehow settled this, today Gasprom proposed to EU pump needed quantity to Ukrainian reservoirs, not for free, of course.

I heard in the USA collection agencies take off debtors property including homes, even can place them to prison. See no reason why Russia must act different, must subsidize hostile regime.
