Iraq is falling apart, and Iran is eager to help America save face (again).
Extremist militants from the al-Qaeda offshoot Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) have captured Iraq's second-largest city and have advanced within 60 miles of the capital.
Iran has responded by sending thousands of elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) forces and militiamen to Baghdad's aid, in addition to further mobilizing of the proxy Shia-militias that are already active there.
Furthermore, the U.S. is opening direct dialogue with Iran over the security situation despite the fact that the IRGC's slogan is "Death To America" and those Shia-militias boasted about killing Americans during the Iraq War when recruiting fighting forces to support Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

Why is it in American interests to get involved in a civil war there?
Iran is the globe's biggest threat
Anything that keeps Muslims killing Muslims over there, rather than Westerners over here, is a good thing.
We removed their dictator, and tried to set them up as nicely as we did Germany and Japan. Sadly, the Liberals didn't want success there, and had us run away decades before it was ready to stand on its own in a highly volatile area of the world. (Note: we STILL have large military assets in Germany and Japan, 7 decades later.) As such, we feel somewhat responsible.
The spread of Freedom and Free Republics
Lots of errors and misassumptions.
“Iran has responded by sending thousands of elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) forces and militiamen to Baghdad’s aid,”
-I’ve read of one brigade of Al Quds. 1200 intel and C&C. I doubt they would send militiamen since Iraqis don’t particularly like Iranians.
“...in addition to further mobilizing of the proxy Shia-militias that are already active there.”
-Just plain wrong. Al Sadr is Iran’s proxy. Al Sistani is not. He often has a different position from (the upstart) Al Sadr. Sistani called up the Shia militia.
“Furthermore, the U.S. is opening direct dialogue with Iran over the security situation despite the fact that the IRGC’s slogan is “Death To America” and those Shia-militias boasted about killing Americans during the Iraq War.”
-Inaccurate. The Shia militia which fought the Coalition was the Iranian Mahdi and Iranian militants led by (Iranian proxy) Al Sadr. For the most part the “Shia militias” were Iranian not Iraqi. The Iraqi Shia resent the Iranian Shia for the destruction they brought into Shia areas. The Mahdi were routinely routed in their battles with the Coalition so it’s a bit of a stretch to boast about that. The Iranians fighters are inferior to even the Iraqis.
Yes - I need more reasons. I think I would prefer to see Islam divided among Shia and Sunni, as is happening now. When they are fighting each other are they fighting us as much?
It’s a twofer for Iran.
Exert military and political influence
Remove U S military bases next door.
Thank you foreign policy guru Barak the Magnificient.
Wow, these people got an upgrade from just being muslims to militant muslims and then a further upgrade to extremist muslims, now they get the grand size upgrade to Extremist militants from the al-Qaeda ..........
You all can put as much lipstick on that pig as you want. It is still a pig...........
