Ukraine crisis: Russia halts gas supplies to Kiev

Ukraine says Russia has cut off all gas supplies to Kiev, in a major escalation of a dispute between the two nations.

"Gas supplies to Ukraine have been reduced to zero," Ukrainian Energy Minister Yuri Prodan said.

Russia's state-owned gas giant Gazprom said Ukraine had to pay upfront for its gas supplies, after Kiev failed to settle its huge debt.

Gazprom had sought from Kiev $1.95bn (£1.15bn) - out of $4.5bn it says it is owed - by 06:00 GMT.

SNIP--

"Today, from 10:00 Moscow time, Gazprom, according to the existing contract, moved Naftogaz to prepayment for gas supplies," Gazprom said in a statement on Monday morning.

"From today, the Ukrainian company will receive Russian natural gas only in the amounts it has paid for."

From RT:
This decision was taken due to systematic failure of Naftogaz Ukraine to pay. The debt of the company for Russian gas stands at $4.458 billion, including $1.451 billion for November and December 2013, and $3.007 billion for April-May 2014,” Gazprom said in a statement posted on their website.

They’ve paid zero. Correspondingly we deliver zero,” Sergey Kupriyanov, a Gazprom spokesperson said in a press conference following the announcement

What happens if I don’t pay my heating bill for 2011 until the present time? Would I still be getting heating oil? Kiev was offered a great deal. What do they expect?

The reason for the collapse in talks: Kiev wants to pay $268.5 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas - the price it had been offered when Yanukovich was in power - but, in a compromise last week, said it would agree to pay $326 for an interim period until a lasting deal was reached. Moscow had sought to keep the price at the 2009 contract level of $485 per 1,000 cubic meters, but had offered to waive an export duty, bringing down prices by about one-fifth to $385, which brings it broadly into line with what Russia charges other European countries.

In other words, the delta was less than $60, and certainly a “fair” offer to Ukraine considering it is what Europe pays.

Kiev only wants to pay the gas price that the hated Ex-Pres negotiated, in return for NOT signing on with the EU. Russia says that deal ended with the anti-Russian coup.

So Kiev wants to both pay the old price, negotiated for being a partner with Russia AND not pay their back bill which was the old negotiated price?

That doesn't make any sense. If you don't pay on the lower price the contract allows, the contract is no longer in effect.

These Kiev guys seem to be on Obama's level of logic.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden’s kid sits on the board of Ukraine’s Naftgas, which is now selling big quantities of gas they haven’t paid for, stored underground, and whatever they can steal from what Russia is sending to Europe.

Gotta love this scam. Take a look at who is PROFITING from this.

What’s the Crimean peninsula worth?
-seems to me that Russia owes Ukraine some money for that little land grab.

Count it as a foreclosure and repo.
For 25 years clans of corrupt Ukrainian politicians were running around a Russian pipeline, pocketing a hundred billion of dollars selling discounted Russian gas at market price in Europe. Now these jerks are acting muslim campaigning on ‘Death to Russia’ slogans but they are somehow surprised that their free money has gone.

Probably worth a hell of a lot more than the amount at stake here.

These Kiev guys seem to be on Obama's level of logic.

Don't forget Russia just stole an entire section of their country and are currently waging a disinformation and covert military war against Ukraine in the East. They are also holding on to their "ex-President" who stole billions from the Ukrainian treasury.

All this reminds me of the Russkie "security" service who would bust into a home, rob them, rape the women, and then still demand they pay their taxes to the state 10 times above the amount that they had just robbed. (And thereafter shoot them in the head, if they had not yet met their death quota.)

Corruption is endemic in Ukraine. Affiliation of exact crooks to either East or West is secondary.
