Curiously, the dramatic climax of Marion Barry’s autobiography is exactly the kind of salacious moment that he has long dismissed as irrelevant and sensational, a notorious incident that steers attention far away from his life’s work:
It was sometime in the 1980s, and the mayor was at a party at a house he frequented on 11th Street NW. A woman who was doing coke offered him some, noting that the stuff made her “hot.” This was enough for Barry: “I told myself, what the hell? Why not?”
She put a line of cocaine on a business card, and the mayor of the capital of the free world raised it to his nose. “I exhaled instead of inhaled and blew all of the powder off the card,” he writes. The second try, he got it right. It “felt like I had ejaculated,” Barry writes. “The cocaine was a powerful stimulant that went straight to my penis.” He had sex with the unnamed woman. “From that point on, you chase that same high and sex that you felt the first time.”
Much of the mayor-for-life’s new autobiography is devoted to blasting the news media, the white political and business establishments, and white voters for the racism that Barry says led to his 1990 arrest on drug charges, the constant drumbeat of allegations of cronyism and corruption that plagued his four terms as mayor, and the pressures that fed his personal demons.

“Why the hell not?”
1) It’s illegal. You are supposed to be an executor of the law, not a violator.
2) You are in a position of authority and trust. It’s hard to “faithfully execute the laws” of the commonwealth while blasted out of your gourd.
3) You are a highly visible example to others. Instead of indulging yourself in some cheap frat-boy antics, you could use your bully pulpit to demonstrate social responsibility.
4) You have enemies who will use these kinds of incidents to destroy your career.
For starters ...

Anything in the book about how he avoided arrest for the OIC financial fiasco (his wife and the othe OIC officers went to jail but not him)?
Anything on gets arms for black youth at Agnes Sailor’s farm in nearby Virginia?
Anything about how he beat his second wife Effie so badly that she had to go, incognito, to a hospital in Baltimore fore restorative treatment of her beautiful face?
Anything about his role when on the DC City Council in the 1970’s, in restricting the ability of the DC Metropolitan Police Department’s CID in keeping track of local and incoming radicals, internal Black Moslem infighting, and KGB-related operatives coming in for the “peace movement”?
Karim Abdul Jabbar’s Moslem faction, the Hannafis, were literaly wiped out in a murderous raid by an opposing Black Moslem faction. The Hannafis had been under surveillance by the CID until ordered to stop operations, one of the demands of Barry and his leftist/communist friends.
Won’t even mention kickbacks, cronyism, and other criminal activities of the Mayor for Life. It should have been “Convict for Life”, but in DC, a self-promoted black radical rip-off artist (a literal mentor for Al Sharpton), keeps getting elected by the “no education/low education and dumbassed” black electorate.
Honest blacks were afraid to speak out against the Barry Machine for fear of their life, limb, job and family.
DC is still stinking and stained from Barry’s ignominious and crook career.
If there is ever a museum for black politican crooks and charlatans, it will include:

Al Sharpton
Jesse Jackson Jr, and son
Gov. Dervil Patrick
Rep. John Conyers Jr
Rep. Charles Rangel
Rep. Danny Davis
Mayor Coleman Young
and a cast of thousands

Including Congressman Hank Johnson (who was concerned that the island of Guam would “tip over and capsize” if too many American troops were sent there) and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (Will the Mars Rover visit the area of Mars where the astronauts planted the flag?), and, of course, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (”We do not have a crisis at Freddie Mac, and particularly Fannie Mae, under the outstanding leadership of Frank Raines”).

So many dumb aholes, not enough educated voters.
I’m really worried about Guam tipping over. Might cause a tsunami that will wipe out life on Mars.
