When my sister did taxes for H&R Block she said illegals would file taxes. When she asked why one of them said, “To establish that I was here and paying taxes. One day that will make me a citizen.”

Constitutionally, only the Congress has the power to set conditions for citizenship. It is one of the enumerated powers of Congress.

Article 1 section 8 reads in part:

...”To establish a uniform Rule of Naturalization, and uniform Laws on the subject of Bankruptcies throughout the United States;...”

That said, the state of NY has been nuts for decades. There are no other ways to explain the Cuomo dynasty. Bloomy and the commie who replaced him!

Can I ask a stupid question???

Is it even possible to be a “citizen” of a state? I thought we were American “citizens” and “residents” of whatever state we live in.

And regarding immigration and legal status, we have been told by liberals that it is improper for a state to deal with immigration and legal status; that this is a federal responsibility.

Yet in this case, New York is doing this on their own, with no federal involvement.

What am I missing???

Looks like they are going to try to use the same model they are using for homosexual marriage. What happens when the illegal alien who is a declared legal resident of New York comes into contact with a state that isn’t playing along with New York and gets deported?

Appears to be unconstitutional under 14th Amendment:

“1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State
wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.”

Power reserved to federal govt only.
States cannot usurp federal citizenship granting powers. Ergo, the illegal immigrant would be a “citizen” of NY State only and would have no American citizenship rights in an other state or states and could be deported.

Reductio ad absurdam.

No such thing as “citizen of New York” ONLY.. It does not exist in the Constitution.

Ergo illegal Act by a State govt against the Constitution.

Only special act or Bill of citizenship for individual[s]by Congress can grant citizenship apart from the federal judicial or executive branches.

Huh? How can a STATE government grant UNITED STATES citizenship to a person?

Yet another example of state governments constantly abusing their powers and thumbing their nose at federal law, while we hear delusional claims the "states rights" crowd about how the poor widdle states can't do anything and have become complete puppets of the feds. News to every state government I've seen!

Sounds like these idiots are confusing “residency” with citizenship. I believe only the federal government can make that call.

Yeah right!!! Illegals are going to start paying taxes and abiding by state laws so they can vote and get their names on a government list? They vote anyway without any responsibilities of being a citizen. I’d love that deal.
