CSI-IRS: What do you know, Jay Carney’s replacement is also a computer forensics expert

The IRS claims to have lost a couple years worth of select Lois Lerner emails, and they are unrecoverable. Jay Carney’s incoming replacement, Josh Earnest, said Monday that the IRS’ version of the story is a “fact”:

A top White House official blamed a computer crash for the disappearance of emails from embattled former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner, echoing the explanation the agency gave Congress last week for the two years’ worth of missing subpoenaed correspondence.

“I think it’s entirely reasonable. And it’s fact,” incoming White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters aboard Air Force One Monday.

“You’ve never heard of a computer crashing before?” he asked.

Wow, that was easy. Call off the investigation!

My simple rule of thumb is that, at a minimum, if the government wouldn’t accept the excuse from us, we don’t accept it from them.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the IRS can’t produce stored copies of some of Lerner’s email because they’ve been saving the planet by recycling the “backup tapes,” a term that when applied to 2011 tech might as well be “8-tracks”:

The agency said that because of financial and computing constraints, some emails “that do not qualify as official records” had been stored only on individuals’ computers and not on servers, and that “backup tapes” from 2011 “no longer exist because they have been recycled.”

The I.R.S. went on to say that after May 2013 it changed its archival policy so that backup devices would no longer be recycled. It also said that it was not in contact with Ms. Lerner, who quit last September after serving as the head of the agency’s division on tax-exempt organizations, and could not interview her.

The biggest hint of some sort of cover-up is this ridiculous excuse that those emails have evaporated into the ether. Everybody knows that’s not true. Even CNN mocked it (video via Noah Rothman at Hot Air):

(video at link)

Prediction: Eventually the Lerner emails from 2011 and before will surface. Who knows, she might be busy writing them as we speak.

Is there one single grain of truth that ever comes out of the mouths of these a$$ holes? I think, not a syllable. Not now, not ever. They lie and lie and lie. Then when they think we can’t take any more of their bovine scat, they just lie again. I despise these evil scum bags.

Unfortunately they get away with it AKA mainstream media, etc. I have a few neighbors who believe everything that this administration says. No critical thinking skills whatsoever.

I hope you don't associate with those neighbors. I had some neighbors across the street. They had Obama stickers on their car. I would never even acknowledge their existence. If I passed them on the way to the mail box, I would totally ignore them. I wonder if they ever knew why?

The IRS is one set of email servers. The White House is another.

So Lois sends an email to the White House. Alas, because of IRS incompetence, the email is lost. Sigh! What morons!

But guess what? It's still sitting on one or more of those backed-up White House servers, just waiting to be discovered!

Of course, in the process of production and discovery, there is much opportunity for little people to act heroically in the service of the Regime. This is where the Politics of Personal Destruction comes into play. It's 2017. The worm has turned!! A Republican is President. Torquemada is AG. All those who obstructed justice are going to the can!

You’re not wrong but you’re forgetting something here, cyn: the data is only available if those who have the power to recover it are willing to do so.

As an IT engineer, I can tell you that we are beaten mercilessly by business C-level folks if so much as an email is unavailable during an investigation. We have on-site backups, cloud backups, tape backups taken to Iron Mountain, archives, data domains with VSS... the point is there’s an incredibly small chance this is true, because every company, esp. the government, has to CYA.

The only way this could be true is if a ne’er-do-well IT admin deliberately recalled tapes with this data, reanimated it, deleted it, copied over the the tapes, deleted the archives, deleted every last bit and byte of the data scratch files and stubs, and ensured that their cloud provider deleted all of the files and THEIR backups as well. That would be a monumental task for a GROUP of conspirators and nigh on impossible for a single person.

Apparently, their computer “experts” haven’t yet learned how to make back-ups.

Riiiiight.

What would lead the IRS to believe that they can destroy evidence and get away with it.

There is the possibility that Lois Lerner did all of her nefarious deeds using an unofficial email account like a gmail or hotmail. You can set Outlook up with IMAP or POP3 so that messages are downloaded and stored locally and deleted in the online account as soon as they are downloaded. If she was doing this, the messages could have easily been lost, intentionally or otherwise.

I think the use of unofficial email accounts became quite common after the e-discovery events of the Clinton era.

The way this goober defended it with “you’ve never heard of a hard drive crashing before?” leads me to believe they actually thought we’d buy that lame excuse. Never in the history of computing has a “crash” led to the deletion of a batch of specifically timed emails, and only ones sent out of the network. Historic crash.

Hey! Hey!
You don’t believe the newspeak that comes from the ministry of propaganda?

You and the other proles who don’t believe Big
Brother will be rounded up next week and put into reeducation camps (public schools and colleges) to get your mind right.

Good comment!

Government employees MUST use Government E-mail and Government addresses.

If all nefarious communication took place via gmail or hotmail, Lerner would not be able to release those communications. She would have to admit breaking the rules.

If all communication outside the IRS was via g-mail, how does Lerner explain zero communication via Government E-mail and Government assigned address??
Invent the lost/erased excuse!!

Bingo. But with a willing MSM, having the WH press secretary say a "computer crash" destroyed 2 years of email for the head of a department is swallowed hook, line, and sinker.

Remember, a generation ago, the MSM went nuts with the WH claiming to have lost 18 minutes of Nixon's conversations? I know, I know, the MSM was doing God's work destroying a Republican, so it is understandable they would care back then.

I am one of those 25 to 30 million, who can't be re educated, so come get me MOFOs. Things might get a little testy.
