WASHINGTON -- Six Washington Redskins trademarks were cancelled by the U.S. Patent Office in a ruling on Wednesday. The ruling was made because the terms were found disparaging at the time they were registered. Fifty U.S. senators have urged the team to change their name.

Soon, biblical churches will be deemed “disparaging” and will be criminalized. Count on it.
This is the Obama Mafia getting it’s marching orders from the White Hut.
when they don’t have laws to control you, they’ll find another way
Another way to take peoples’ stuff away.
This definitely smells like Obama. Spiteful, childish, hateful.
Taking money away is exactly what they’re doing.
I can’t imagine redskins merchandizing stock is doing too hot right now.
ISIS is closing in on Baghdad, but POTUS can prioritize have “HIS” patent office pull the trademarks of a nearly 100 year old organization because HE deems the name “offensive” and/or “disparaging.” Total abuse of power by a petty little dictator.
Take that one to the Supreme Court. This government by force is way past being absurd.
I can’t see where the gov has moral, ethical or legal standing to deny a renewal. Not sure I can see this for a new patent either, but a little more understandable I think.
Yup. It's an obvious distraction ploy, too. Judging by the speed with which the comment counter at the source article is clicking upward, the ploy seems to be working.
Can we get someone named McCarthy or O’Brian to sue to get the “Fighting Irish” trademark rescinded?
I could use some cheap Notre Dame logo gear.
The team was established in 1932.
Did they really find someone (alive now) who was "disparaged" by the name 82 years ago? Why did it take so long for the disparaged person to come forward?
Can a person be retroactively "disparaged." If so, I'd like to stake a claim on the name "Obama." It has been disparaging me for more than six years.
I think someone needs to assign some readings to our bureaucrats as to the meaning of “ex post facto”. I hope (but doubt) that the teams owners take it to court, as I see no authority to do any such thing.
eBay is going to be flooded with “Collectors Edition” sales, in 3-2-1... Heh.
The Redskins’ front/back offices aren’t cleaning out the closets, and are going to spend big on attys/lawsuits to kill this ruling. The Patent Office Marxists should be stood against a stone wall and... no, I won’t say it.
Harry Reid’s work again . Harry played a very part in the IRS Bull and now here he goes again
Destroying our culture, icons and traditions.
Ti see how this will end, check out what has been done to the bald eagles, wild horses and Christian beliefs.
I’m here from the government and I’m here to help you. Thank you government, I need your help like I need a hole in the head!
I wonder if the Cleveland Browns are going to be similarly affected. Is it a modern day cultural sin to name your team after a famous Negro boxer?
Cleveland Indians, Golden State Warriors, Chicago Blackhawks and Atlanta Braves - YOU ARE NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is this not a violation of private property rights under the Constitution?
It is already happening in the universities. Recent articles about colleges diassociating with christian organizations because they will not allow non-christian leadership.
And what about the Cleveland Indians? Indian is a so 19th century term. Better to have the Cleveland Native Americans, or Cleveland First Peoples.
Ain’t no gangster, like a government gangster. Next poster it correct. People who follow Christ are soon to be next in this Country.
Who were the fifty senators
And sooner than you think.
Is ther any American Indian/Native American group that will sue to get the name given back to the team? From what I have read, at least 90% of Indians polled like the name.
Well said. Petty little dictator, indeed.
A very strong case could be made that the term “Fighting Irish” was disparaging at the time it was adopted by Notre Dame in 1927. In fact, the university objected to the use of the name for many years before finally relenting. Examples abound from the period describing the “fighting Irish” as drunken hooligans of low moral character. All it would take is five people who find the name offensive.
Next PETA will have animal names banned. Goodbye Bears, Bengals, Colts, Rams, Cardinals, Dolphins, Jaguars, Broncos, Seahawks, Eagles, Falcons, Ravens, Lions and Panthers. Buffalo will have to move to Key West or Fire Island to satisfy the sodomites.
So has fascism. The rule of law is dead in this country.
after so many years how do they reverse themselves?
I hope the team fights this political nonsense.
This is just big brother 1984 new speak thought crime BS.
(see also bundle of twigs)
I was never a fan of Dan Snyder, but I hope to God he fights this thing, it is absurd.
I liked Rush Limbaugh’s idea, change the mascot to a potato, what can they do then? Checkmate!
Couldn’t agree more, DonaldC. Fedgov making this call is taking on a moralistic mantle that has never been within its purview.
This is BS.
You’re right...apple pie will be next, as they’ve already destroyed Chevrolet.
Yum! An enterprising artist could draw the potato as a likeness of Harry Reid...if Snyder were to adopt such a logo, I think that would be the last laugh (at least for people with common sense — leftists have no sense of humor).
If I was an owner of the Washington ***skins, I would cancel all future home games and take down any and all signs that indicate they were ever any part of Washington.
"Whuut? Y-You mean to tell me there's a team called the Redskins? B-buh boo hooo hooo"
I’d say it violates the 1st amendment as well.
Using a trademark that isn’t registered isn’t against the law. The only thing it prevents you from doing is suing someone else for using the same trademark.
