Iraq has formally called on the US to launch air strikes against jihadist militants who have seized several key cities over the past week.

"We have a request from the Iraqi government for air power," confirmed top US military commander Gen Martin Dempsey in front of US senators.

Earlier the Sunni insurgents launched an attack on Iraq's biggest oil refinery at Baiji north of Baghdad.

Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki earlier urged Iraqis to unite against the militants.

Government forces are battling to push back ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant) and its Sunni Muslim allies in Diyala and Salahuddin provinces, after the militants overran the second city, Mosul, last week.

US President Barack Obama met senior Congress members on Wednesday to discuss the Iraq crisis. The White House said Mr Obama had "reviewed our efforts to strengthen the capacity of Iraq's security forces to confront the threat from ISIL [ISIS], including options for increased security assistance"

That putz Maliki should have thought about such a scenario before he said no to a residual force. Of course, our own putz agreed.

I agree with you, however O Drama squandered the chance after we won in Iraq to build a consensus between the Sunni’s & Shiite’s....even develop territories to which there could be safety for various sects.

Fine...let them pay for it. Let's see, aircraft costs, ordnance/munitions, reasonable compensation for our military PLU combat pay.

In other words, all associated costs.

Yeah, Maliki is as big a moron as Obama and behaves much the same way. He fired all the military brass that we trained and replaced them with guys loyal to him.

We would have been better off installing a military dictatorship and leaving it that way.

Yep.

Don’t care.

We wasted Billions on the largest Embassy in the World and I have no doubt it will be over run soon.

Just wait for the last helicopter..

Muslims asking the US for air strikes to kill Muslims. I thought killing them with air strikes was “why they hate us” in the first place? Such a quandary. lol.

Obama will do very little - he wants to win in Syria and to him that means replacement of Assad - The weapons confiscated from Iraq are going to help fight the war in Syria. I don’t think he cares who replaces Assad. The kick-off for this current crisis is the USA and EU providing weapons to the opposition during the Arab Spring - As we now see (and as I said when Arab Spring was beginning) creating a vacuum in the ME is a very very bad idea. Now if a half educated Security officer from the bottom of the world can see and understand then why couldn’t Obama - it is not because he is stupid - it is because he and the Left are blinded by their own agenda. Obama and the EU have been rubbing two stick of dynamite together and hoping to create a controlled fire but it is all about to go boooom in their faces!

Not me - I am not so sure with Putin - I think he might have a big Russian bus that he throws people under when they get too hard to keep. I went and watched some of the video of ISIS on the MEMRI site - what a retrograde bunch of cowards they are. They execute people like they are taking a selfie and then all cheer Allah Akbar. They really are the scum of the planet!
