Washington Some political campaigns are marathons, but for U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, of Jefferson, this one has been more of a sprint and it ends Thursday afternoon when he finds out if he will take over the No. 3 spot in the ruling House Republican majority.
That spot majority whip would represent the highest any Louisiana Republican has climbed in the U.S. House leadership (although one of his 1st Congressional District predecessors, Bob Livingston, came within an extramarital indiscretion of landing the top job of House speaker in 1998).
The constituency for the leadership election is small: The 233 Republicans in the House. They will meet behind closed doors Thursday afternoon and cast secret ballots to decide if Scalise beats out the two other candidates for whip.

Let’s hope a red state repub gets into leadership - even if it is only for 6 months.
I don’t know who else is running for whip, but I can’t imagine that he’s more conservative than Scalise. While not every Louisiana Republican congressman is a near-perfect conservative, Scalise certainly fits the bill.
GOP (=Give.Obama.Power) Party:
"King Obama made us, our families, our staff,
and even their families EXEMPT from ObamaCARE.
For such and other consideration, he was and remains OUR King."
Great...
Majority leader will be from California and the whip will be from Illinois.
Peter Roskam, 52, of Illinois
Marlin Stutzman, 37, of Indiana
Clearly, Roskam is from a blue state.
I don't know if Indiana is weak red state or just a red state, which is where Stutzman is from.
But the Deep South has been strongly RED STATES.
About the worst thing about Louisiana is that we still have Mary Landrieu as Senator.
Get rid of her, and there will be only one Democrat in the Congressional delegation of two senators and six house members.
The state legislature has passed some good pro-life legislation.
One bill (HB388) will close three of the five abortion clinics.
The other bill (HB305) prevents any group that promotes or does abortions from being in the Public Schools.
That means that Planned Parenthood is banned from Louisiana public schools. Too, too bad... [ /sarcasm off ]
we can grab our collective ankles now.
Do guys like Cantor and McConnell actually go to school to learn how to make that horrible wimp face?
Great, switching from one RINO to a more liberal one..& no to Roksam!
If that isn’t a sorry looking group. Their inaction is responsible for so many downfalls in our country. Just look at the border. Our country. . third world status in in a day!
Bttt
mccarthy
The GOP is mostly followers with only one or two leaders.
Now that the libs got in who they wanted they will now trash the person they wanted becasue they are a Republican, they will probably call the Tea Party Racist for not voting in Raul labrado in as Minority Whip despite the fact most Tea Party people wanted Raul in that position...
The GOPe is so damned stuipid they will act like a beaten dog who will play fetch endlessley for the occasional scratch behind the ear from the MSM, all while ignoring the constant beatings all the other times by the MSM....
Is mccarthy very bad? I don’t know much about him.
Scalise won.
It was a tight race, and it might have been the vote among Midwesterns was split between Roskam (Illinois) and Stutzman (Indiana).
It is possible that voting was somewhat along geographical boundaries, but it is unclear.
Scalise won in a tight race, and that is what the Morning Advocate predicted: Scalise to win and for it to be a tight race.
One Freeper even thought the article should be a barf alert.
Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz did not like this choice...
95 PERCENT OF ELECTED REPUBLICANS EITHER FAKE OR REPUDIATE CONSERVATISM AND THAT IS REFLECTED IN THE LEADERSHIP ELECTED TODAY......CASE CLOSED.....
Thanks I went to the thread in breaking news.
