Sticks And Stones: Whatever one's view about the name "Redskins," the public should worry about the government bowing to political pressure and stripping a trademark nearly 80 years after it was first used. Where will it end? [snip]
Surely the Cleveland Indians' mascot has to go. Chief Wahoo is a goofy cartoon depiction of a Native American, whereas the Redskins logo shows a dignified and stoic warrior.
And how about the "Fighting Irish"? Doesn't that feed into the disparaging image of drunken Irishmen? Or the "Buccaneers" and the "Raiders," which seem to be derogatory terms for pirates? How many "Vikings" mascots wear a farcical, and historically inaccurate, horned helmet?
For that matter, what about names such as "Dago Swagg" or "Mammy Jamia's"? Both are registered trademarks that employ what could be construed as derogatory names.

Hail to the Redskins!
I’m going to buy a few vintage Redskins jerseys while I can just so I can wear them around and pi$$ liberals off.
Here’s a chance to get rid of Oklahoma ... the name means “red skinned people” ... I would think that would be some kind of abuse for someone!
By his majesty’s royal decree, King Barack of the House Soteoro, henceforth all competitive sports teams shall only be known as ‘The Sharks.” And when in situations that competition must arise between two teams, his majesty’s record will reflect outcomes by label of ‘Sharks of Lord X’ over ‘Sharks of Lord Y.’
I am Ani-Yun-Wiya. (If you don’t know, look it up.)
I have absolutely no problem at all with the nicknames of ANY sports teams...It’s just that...a nickname...
Got a great idea for making money off the “Fighting Irish” logo but don’t feel like paying royalties to Notre Dame? Just collect enough Irish friends who are willing to say they’re offended, march ‘em over to the patent and trademark office, get a good lawyer, and your home free!
Since this is a political decision coming out of Washington, I would not schedule anymore home games until that decision is reversed.
What about the Atlanta Braves and their stupid tomahawk chop chant?
Next TEA Party event in DC everyone should wear a redskins red and gold.
-—how about changing the name to THE WASHINGTON THIN SKINS
with a picture of H Reid in a skirt as the logo??
Its not a slippery slope, its the bottom of the cess pit.
And what about the (blessed) cheesemakers’ feelings toward the Packers’ symbol?
Well good, at least the San Jose Sharks won't have to change their name.
How about uncle Ben too....perhaps a few white uncle bens would be offended. Wait a minute, sorry, whites don’t count.
