Texas Gov. Rick Perry needled GOP Sen. Ted Cruz, saying he was skeptical a “junior senator” could have made a big difference in state politics.

“Texas is pretty big; it’s pretty diverse; the legislature is a microcosm of the state, so I’m not sure one person has the ability to change all that,” Perry, a Republican, told reporters at a Thursday lunch hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

Perry, who openly acknowledges he is mulling a presidential bid in 2016, has often been on the opposite side of Cruz in local politics. In 2012, Cruz defeated Perry’s endorsed candidate, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, in a runoff for the Senate.

This cycle, Cruz— who is also considering a 2016 bid — has largely stayed out of federal elections, with a couple exceptions. But Cruz has played in some of the state elections in Texas, including endorsing state Sen. Dan Patrick over Dewhurst’s re-election earlier this year.

“We all get our 15 seconds of fame, right,” Perry said. “Whether it was Ann Richards, or whether it was George W. Bush or whether it was Rick Perry or whether it was Ted Cruz. Long term, I think it requires somebody with substantial staying power to make a long-term difference in Texas.

“The idea that a personality in the political arena can change Texas may be a little bit outside the realm of reality,” he continued. “Ask me in eight years if Sen. Cruz has made an impact on the state. At this particular point in time, it’s a little early to say that a junior senator would have substantively changed the state.”

I could agree on that point if it were, say, Rick as a second (i.e., running mate) to Ted Cruz.

In my recollection, there has been NO recent named Republican who has stood so fast and so unapologetically than Ted Cruz. The only one I can ascribe such loyalty to ideals and determination is Ronald Reagan. The rest are pikers of whimsy and political winds.

If it comes down to a contest between Perry and Cruz for the Texas delegation, my money is on Perry. He has been around Texas politics for a long time and has the organization that Cruz lacks. Besides of that, if you have seen Perry on TV lately he comes across as having consumate likeable political skills that Cruz hasn’t yet acquired.

I sympathize. I would not choose him as first. But I would, given the opportunity, support him as a running mate for Ted Cruz.

Both from Texas. Can’t happen, per US Constitution

Exactly what are ‘political skills?’

I much prefer Cruz's unwavering and flawless adherence to principles and ideals.

In other words, keeping to one's ideals the true intention is far preferable to political maneuvering for the sake of manipulating the outcome.

No can do. Cruz and Perry are from the same state, thus cannot run as a ticket.

Okay....I concede on that point. Then my choice is Cruz, hands down.

Well one thing is for sure if we let the GOP leadership foist another Mitt, Jeb,Christy type RINO candidate off on us in 2016 we are toast. I will take my chances with Rick Perry over those guys any day of the week. I am anxious to see how Ted Cruz shakes out on the National debate stage. I feel like he will be a rock star.

Understand. I forgot that. Thanks for pointing it out. Then it’s Cruz for me.

Per the 12th Amendment both could run, but the electors of TX could not cast their ballots for both

So practically it would never happen as you could with a Perry/Booker administration after a Perry/Cruz vs. Hillary/Booker race.

Well if there was any lingering doubt that Perry is running for president then this should put it to rest.

The most important thing we can do is encourage Krispy Kreme, Jeb, Paul Ryan, and Marco Rubio to ALL run to the bitter end (heck, even Romney again).

That more than anything would allow one of the conservatives to take the nomination.

Divide their vote, like they've been doing to us all these years.

Look at me! Look at me! Perry is such a needy jerk, I wonder if he and Peter King are related.

Perry isn’t fit to shine Ted Cruz’s black snakeskin boots.

It can, but they couldn't get the electoral votes from Texas: "The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves..."

I could care less how personable Perry is or how well he comes across on televison. Cruz is a fighter. A bare knuckle brawler who also happens to posses one of the brightest minds in the political sphere as of right now. Give me those two God given attributes any day of the week. Go Cruz!!

I think I disagree. Instead of a 2 year shootout, conservatives should decide early on a candidate and back him/her all the way. In 2012 we hurt ourselves with the debate franchises. I say get behind Cruz, or Palin(if She is serious), or Walker and beat a drumbeat to the American sheeple that we will not have a nation for long if they continue to vote for democrats. This party hates God, family, free enterprise, the military, amongst a host of other things. They must be stopped if we are to keep the Visogoths outside our gates!

“he completely blew it through amateurish, not ready for prime time behavior.”

****

I’ll vote for Cruz over Gov. Goodhair any day of the week.

That being said, the 2012 flop by Perry was primarily because of the heavy pain meds he was taking for back surgery.

It could be Fort Worth or Brady, however, the interpretation is made. The West starts with Fort Worth, or Brady is the heart of Central Texas.
