In his first Congressional appearance since news of the lost Lois Lerner emails, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen was alternately attacked by Republicans and praised by Democrats who apologized to him for his treatment and called the investigation an “endless conspiracy theory” by Republicans.
Under oath before the House Ways and Means Committee, Koskinen restated what Congress had been told privately: that emails of Lerner and six other relevant IRS officials have been irretrievably lost because of crashes of their hard drives and servers.
Koskinen defended not telling Congress in numerous previous appearances about the email losses. In those appearances, he assured Congress that all the Lerner emails would be provided. Koskinen says his testimony at that time wasn’t dishonest because he was going to provide all the emails “we had.” He also said that he wasn’t fully aware of the crashed hard drives and the status of the lost emails until April or May.
Koskinen argued that he has been honest and transparent and that the fuss today is “a result of us providing you a full accounting.”
“Why should anyone believe you?” asked Kevin Brady (R-Texas).
“I want to apologize to you for the way you’ve been treated this morning,” said Rep. Elijah Cummings (R-Maryland) to Koskinen. Cummings then offered Koskinen time to say whatever he wanted.

Maybe the IRS should start apologizing to folks that get audited, but "lose" their receipts due to a "computer crash."
Sorry Mr. Taxpayer for accusing you of lying and pestering you. Don't worry about those penalties and interest. We offended your sensibilites. That'll happen, right?
Did anyone ask if citizens can claim their records are lost when questioned/audited by the IRS?

The behavior of the democrats is the most damning thing about it.
They treated the IRS as if it were some kind of poor oppressed federal agency while repeatedly attacking the American people.

I knew it was a mistake to allow any Rats on the investigation.
This whole pony show is being orchestrated by the dems. Stall until it blows over. Blow it over ASAP with help from the media. A few shiny objects flash here and there to distract the public and the RINOs will do as their told.

And the total amount of emails that were then on hand was between hardly-anything and none. With a tendency towards the none part of that range.
It's the ol' "between Slim and none" defense, with Slim having just left town.
This IRS commissioners smugness will not play to the unwashed masses.
Cummings isn’t a fool, he’s a co-conspirator. Previous hearings have shown his office was in improper contact with the IRS to obtain info on some of the targeted organizations.
He is a co-conspirator. However, that does not preclude his being a fool.
This must be Bush’s fault some how.
I still can’t believe the Repubs are focused on the hard drive of a laptop. What about her desktop computer, firewall logs, exchange server logs and the offsite backup media? That’s where you can find the evidence. The hard drive crash is a distraction.
