CBS: Rick Perry "stepped right in it" comparing gays to alcoholics
CBS News ^ | 06/20/2014 | LINDSEY BOERMA

Texas Gov. Rick Perry probably shouldn't have attempted to make the case that gay people can "decide not to" be gay despite genetic predisposition, he conceded Thursday, offering no semblance of an apology but trying instead to rally attention back to his message about jobs and the economy.

"I got asked about an issue," Perry, a Republican, explained during a lunch hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. "And instead of saying, 'You know what? We need to be a really respectful and tolerant country - to everybody - and get back to talking about: Whether you're gay or straight, you need to be having a job.' And those are the focuses I want to be involved with.

"Instead," he went on, "I readily admit - I stepped right in it."

Perry was asked during an appearance in San Francisco last week whether he believes homosexuality is a disorder. He seized the opportunity to liken "the homosexual issue" with the physically debilitating disease of alcoholism.

"Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not," he said, "you have the ability to decide not to do that. I may have the genetic coding that I'm inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that. And I look at the homosexual issue the same way."

The remark, delivered during an appearance at the San Francisco Commonwealth Club, drew "murmurs of disbelief" from the audience, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, though it merely echoed a similar comparison he made in his 2008 book, "On My Honor."

It's not the first time Perry - who's currently chewing over a 2016 White House run - has "stepped in it," nor is it the first time he's turned that particular phrase.

I thought it was a pretty good analogy. Just because your born that way (if indeed they are) doesn’t mean it can’t and shouldn’t be corrected.

We really need to be comparing Democrat spending addicts to alcoholics.

Think about it - if homosexuality were genetic, it would have died out long ago because homos can’t mate to pass along that characteristic.

On the other hand, people who have a genetic predisposition toward alcoholism can (and do) make offspring that do also.

Why is this not labeled OPINION? As in, according to CBS’ OPINION, Rick Perry...

I think Perry just made lots of alcoholics mad at him!

:)

Seriously, If the gay rights position is that they were “born that way” (And frankly I do not know if it is nature or nurture) -— why on Earth would the gay lobby be upset with what Perry said?

Yes, some are more disposed to alcoholism, just look at the Native Americans who struggle with that issue.

Yes, perhaps some are more prone to homosexuality due to genetic issues. Is that not what the Left has been telling us?

Maybe Perry should have spoken about hair or eye color but genetics is genetics.

RE: CBS too busy covering stuff like this to focus on the IRS scandal.

MSM wants to blow a statement like this out of proportion, as if one’s belief about homosexuality has a huge connection with one’s ability to govern...

If Perry stepped into anything, it was a big stinking pile of CBS covered with flies.

They have scrapers on the back porch for that stuff.

He didn’t compare gays to alcoholics. He compared one condition with a known genetic element (alcoholism) to another condition that advocates keep insisting must have a genetic element (homosexuality).

What about Pedophiles, were they “born that way” too?

He said: “I may have the genetic coding that I’m inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way.”

What it means to me is: “if you don’t want to get drunk, don’t take the first drink.” And, “if you are a man and don’t want to be gay...don’t put stuff where it don’t belong,” which is about as polite as I can put it.

Exactly right. Typical corrupt MSM will blow this completely out of proportion. I mean over the top, but the IRS scandal? The deleted e-mails? The border surge? Barely a mention.

This is the corruption of the MSM in a nutshell.

So heterosexuality is a genetic disposition. Are all genetic dispositions like alcoholism? How does the press make such an overreaching comparison and get away with it?

RE: advocates keep insisting must have a genetic element (homosexuality).

Let’s say it has a genetic element ( for arguments sake ), what follows? We should not celebrate it?

If Pedophilia has a genetic element, should we celebrate it too?

This mistake in thinking a naturalistic fallacy. You can’t get an “ought” from an “is.”

Even if homosexuality is natural, it doesn’t prove it OUGHT to be. You can replace homosexuality with Pedophilia or Alcoholism and the argument would be the same.

And scientists who are attempting to prove homosexuality is inborn agree.

Harvard geneticist Dean Hamer, himself a homosexual, says, “Biology is amoral; it offers no help in distinguishing between right and wrong. Only people guided by their values and beliefs can decide what is moral and what is not.”

Simon LeVay, a Harvard trained neuroscientist and also openly gay, concurs: “First, science itself cannot render judgments about human worth or about what constitutes normality or disease. These are value judgments that individuals must make for themselves, while taking scientific findings into account.”

The MORAL issue is an entirely separate issue altogether.

If our country’s MORAL foundation is going to be Judaeo-Christian and we still want to preserve the foundation, then we will say that homosexual acts are wrong and immoral.

If not... well I guess anything goes. One man’s meat becomes another man’s poison and it will all depend on who is in power.

As I understand it, gays now want to be thought of as having some sort of genetic predisposition towards their identity. But that seems odd. If there is indeed such a genetic factor, you would think that over time it would lead to the elimination of gays from the gene pool. Would not a same-sex gene lead to a failure of people with that gene to reproduce themselves? "Gay pride" is based on having a gene that wants to get rid of you?

Getting back to Perry, if he compares homosexuality to alcoholism, isn't he saying much the same thing - that homosexuality involves a genetic predisposition?
