Rick Perry: I “stepped right in it” when I compared homosexuality to alcoholism (VIDEO's)

What he said is less interesting on the merits than it is as a sign of how his strategy’s changed since 2012.

The Texas Republican Party this month adopted a platform supporting access to “reparative therapy” for gays and lesbians, a widely discredited process intended to change sexual orientation. In response to an audience question about it Wednesday night, Perry said he did not know whether the therapy worked.

Commonwealth Club interviewer Greg Dalton then asked him whether he believes homosexuality is a disorder.

“Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that,” Perry said. “I may have the genetic coding that I’m inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way.”

The large crowd gathered at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins hotel on Nob Hill included many Perry supporters. But the comment still drew a murmur of disbelief.

If I think I am Jesus, it isn’t a widely discredited process to send me to a shrink...

If I think I love sheep a bit too much, it isn’t a widely discredited process to send me to a shrink...

These are no different.

I like Perry but he has got to control the media better. The story about him is always how he flubs a question or says something that the press can twist into something infamatory.

Alcoholism is a behavior and a disease.

The same applies to Homosexuality.

What he said was factual, and he should have no regrets.

That’s his big problem and what tripped him up during the primaries for 2012. He’s not as bad a gaffe master as Biden, but not far off.

If gay people who were molested as children by depraved faggots want to undo the damage, and live a sexually normal life, more power to them. The gay lobby shouldn’t be allowed to force people to live in disgusting, sexual filth.

“widely discredited process”??

There are many former “gays” out there. I guess Allahpundit thinks this is impossible?

Rick Perry. I am from Texas. A Conservative.

We can do LOTS better for president.

Texan Conservatives battled Rick for years over liberal social engineering, and crony handouts to his relatives and foreign companies. Note I said CONSERVATIVES. GOP RINO types are big Perry boosters.

Whey they tell you Rick wants to make it a law to vaccinate your 12 year old daughter for Sexually Transmitted Diseases, or that he wants to give Texas land to a Spanish company to build a statewide tollway and then charge Texans to drive on it, or when he fills posts with his relatives, or has his relatives a companies that benefit from his policies, you wake up and smell the bullcrap.

Allahpundit is a squish. He and his “moderate” companions are why I stopped reading Hot Air (which used to be pretty good when Michelle Malkin had the reins) and Ace of Spades HQ (which was good until they started filling up with “fiscal conservatives”, aka Log Cabin Repub milquetoasts).

I just want someone who will say what he thinks and stand behind it.

If you didn’t believe what you said then you’re just stupid. Go away Perry.

Great post.

Note I said CONSERVATIVES. GOP RINO types are big Perry boosters.

I particularly liked this part as I and others witnessed this on FR in the past election cycle and we are already seeing it again. It matters not that Perry just one week ago praised Hillary; to them he can do no wrong. Or they refuse to admit it when he does.
