Conservatives Increasingly Wary of Opposing Gay Marriage
NBC News ^ | 6/20/14 | Perry Bacon, Jr.

Conservative Republicans seem to be surrendering in the fight on gay marriage.

At an annual conference this week for the Faith and Freedom Coalition, the religious conservative organization led by former Christian Coalition executive director Ralph Reed, the wave of court rulings over the last year that have struck down gay marriage bans from coast to coast went almost entirely unmentioned.

Speaker after speaker – including a parade of possible 2016 presidential candidates – served up plenty of criticism of the Obama administration and its policies. But none condemned “activist judges,” as Republicans like George W. Bush have in the past. A handful of them invoked the phrase “traditional marriage” or suggested marriage was between a man and a woman, but the leading presidential hopefuls -- including Kentucky’s Rand Paul, Texas’ Ted Cruz, and Florida’s Marco Rubio -- completely avoided the subject.

The “present mess” was supposed to be stopped FOR GOOD by amendments to state constitutions that defined marriage in the way it had always been understood. You see how well those stood up. When the elites want to destroy an institution, they destroy it. Why even give them an opening?

They want “marriage” because of SocSec, pensions, other govt benefits, etc.

But as the years go by, they’ll also be a “jobs” program for “family practice” aka divorce attorneys.

Indeed. I remember during the 2012 campaign, right after Romney got back from Europe, and a reporter asked him his opinion on the Chick-Fil-A “buycott.” The pathetic way Romney responded, by not even offering a generic comment on people standing up for their beliefs, but stuttering an “uh, uh, that’s not part of my campaign,” demonstrated to me what a totally contemptable coward he was. The epitome of everything I despise in a politician. I was already loathe to vote for him, due to his siccing his operatives out to smear and trashtalk Palin. But this did it.

Of course, this was the very same bastard who helped facillitate homo-marriage in his own state as governor. Anyway, it was then and there I really knew in my gut that I couldn’t vote for the guy. The very first GOP candidate in my lifetime to not get my vote. No way in hell will I ever vote for a candidate who is either so cowed by the homo-fascists, or so degenerate as to embrace their agenda.

Gays have always been able to get married and conservatives were fine with it.

It is same sex “marriage” that conservatives are against.

They’re using the same tactics here that they use with “immigrants”, when they say that conservatives are against immigrants. They conveniently leave out the all important modifier “illegal”.

We’re letting them control the language.

I agree with that. And yet, with the media drafting the language, it’s understandable.

We need Conservative alternatives for news in the media, and not just the internet.

I keep wondering if forcing same sex marriage down our throats and forcefully “normalizing” anal sex between men by judges will cause as big a rift in our nation as legalizing abortion has done. Or will it eventually be accepted... My gut tells me not.

Tough!

They are afraid of losing. They will lose everything if they don’t stand up for what is right.

If they try to out liberal the liberals, they will lose. Why would anyone want to vote for a 1/2 liberal, when they can vote for a full liberal.

No, stand up for conservative principles, and stand out.

They ignored the will of the people until they changed it. Now the majority of people believe someone who opposes gay marriage should be fired from their job and punished.

Ditto. This is psyops. Let’s not fall for it. Wasn’t there just a recent poll showing Republicans hadn’t moved morally, but Democrats had slid down the poll?

Blacks, Muslims, Latinos making up the majority of the Democrat base reject SSM. This is an opportunity, not a risk.

The fight for Traditional Marriage is becoming a losing battle. Many Religious Leaders are conceding the gay marriage fight to focus on Religious Liberty. Because once gay marriage is legal in all 50 states, the government will force all churches to approve of gay marriage.

The battle is for religious freedom and the truth.

How interesting...and not coincidental that the pro-homosexual NBC “news” is running this story right at the time of the pro-MARRIAGE march in DC.

Hmm.

By the way, the NBC owned TV station in Miami Florida is an OFFICIAL SPONSOR of the annual homosexual parade in Miami Beach Florida. Their “journalists” even march in the event.

So we know where NBC stands.

Not this conservative. I’m sick of bullies, black bullies, gay bullies, pro-abortion bullies, redskin bullies, all bullies.

Sick of all of them because they will never be satisfied, never. Their cause is trumpeted from every mainstream media source, their judges rule in their favor no matter what the issue, our government is cuckoo-nuts over trying to make them happy but it’s not enough. Even when they ruin people’s careers or businesses for not worshiping at their altar, never enough.

I have feeling that the GOP will be just silent on the gay issue. Instead they will woo social conservatives by doubling down on abortion. Rand Paul at the Faith and Freedom meeting, mentioned how pro-life he was.

The cowardice of politicians is not news.

I will never change my views about traditional morality because of the polls.

Oh, so now republicans will join in the celebration of perversity!

What a principled position!

I agree.

We have all sort of opportunities out there, but our side has conceded so many debates, it’s hard for them to do it anymore.

http://www.sfarchdiocese.org/about-us/archbishop-cordileone/homilies-writings-and-statements/?search=march%20for%20marriage&C=940&I=4035

Dear Fellow Citizens,

Your letter sharing with me your thoughts on the upcoming “March for Marriage” in Washington, D.C., was forwarded to me while I was attending meetings out of town, and I have reflected on what you have to say. I appreciate your affirmation of my Church’s teaching—not unique to our religion, but a truth accessible to anyone of good will—on the intrinsic human dignity of all people, irrespective of their stage and condition in life. That principle requires us to respect and protect each and every member of the human family, from the precious child in the womb to the frail elderly person nearing death. It also requires me, as a bishop, to proclaim the truth—the whole truth—about the human person and God’s will for our flourishing. I must do that in season and out of season, even when truths that it is my duty
to uphold and teach are unpopular, including especially the truth about marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife. That is what will be doing on June 19th.

With regard to your request that I not attend the March, and the reasons you give for this request, allow me to explain the following points.

1. The March for Marriage is not “anti-LGBT” (as some have described it); it is not anti-anyone or anti-anything. Rather, it is a pro-marriage March. The latter does not imply the former. Rather, it affirms the great good of bringing the two halves of humanity together so that a man and a woman may bond with each other and with any children who come from their union. This is precisely the vision promoted by Pope Francis, who recently said, “We must reaffirm the right of children to grow up in a family with a father and mother.” Rest assured that if the point of this event were to single out a group of individuals and target them for hatred, I most certainly would not be there.

2. While I cannot go into all of the details here of your allegations against the sponsors of this event and scheduled speakers, I do know that at least some of what you say is based on misinterpretation or is simply factually incorrect. For example, it is not true that the National Organization for Marriage connects homosexuality with pedophilia and incest. What is true is that three years ago a conference was sponsored in Baltimore by the group B4U-ACT for the purpose of finding ways to encourage tolerance for pedophilia. A statement on NOM’s blogpost objecting to this conference affirmed that this is something that would outrage people in the gay community as well. Unfortunately, many conclusions are being drawn about those involved in the March for Marriage based on false impressions.

3. It gives me assurance that we share a common disdain for harsh and hateful rhetoric. It must be pointed out, though, that there is plenty of offensive rhetoric which flows in the opposite direction. In fact, for those who support the conjugal understanding of marriage, the attacks have not stopped at rhetoric. Simply for taking a stand for marriage as it has been understood
in every human society for millennia, people have lost their jobs, lost their livelihoods, and have suffered other types of retribution, including physical violence. It is true that historically in our society violence has been perpetrated against persons who experience attraction to members of the same sex, and this is to be deplored and eradicated. Sadly, though, we are now beginning to see examples, although thankfully not widespread, of even physical violence against those who hold to the conjugal view of marriage (such as, most notably, the attempted gunning down of those who work in the offices of the Family Research Council). While it is true that free speech can be used to offend others, it is not so much people exercising their right to free speech that drives us further apart than people punished precisely for doing so that does.

4. Please do not make judgments based on stereotypes, media images and comments taken out of context. Rather, get to know us first as fellow human beings. I myself am willing to meet personally with any of you not only to dialogue, but simply so that we can get to know each other. It is the personal encounter that changes the vision of the other and softens the heart.
In the end, love is the answer, and this can happen even between people with such deep disagreements. That may sound fanciful and far-fetched, but it is true, it is possible. I know it is possible, I know this from personal experience. When we come together seeking to understand the other with good will, miracles can happen.

When all is said and done, then, there is only one thing that I would ask of you more than anything else: before you judge us, get to know us.

Sincerely,
Most Reverend Salvatore Cordileone
Archbishop of San Francisco
