Grouse hits 400,000 Acres Out of Energy Production
Colorado Observer. ^ | June 20, 2014 | Audrey Hudson

The federal government’s decision to ban energy development across a wide swath of Colorado and eastern Utah to protect the Gunnison sage grouse habitat has raised concerns the action would inflict economic damage.

Although the Obama administration was not expected to make its decision as to whether the bird warrants the endangered listing until November, the Bureau of Land Management’s decision this week effectively puts an oil, gas and coal moratorium on 400,000 acres – roughly 90 acres per bird.

The final decision was “pushed back until after the election, because when people understand the impact on jobs, people get mad,” said Kathleen Sgamma, vice president of the Western Energy Alliance.

“They know they’ve got a tight Senate race and they know that people in Colorado who are going to vote for the next senator are upset by actions that put jobs and economic growth off –limits,” Sgamma said.

Critics of the decision fear the BLM is following the same playbook it used to list the lesser prairie chicken as threatened in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, Kansas and Oklahoma.

...

The federal government is also considering placing the greater sage grouse on the endangered species list and locking up 1.7 million acres of land it has deemed as critical habitat in 11 states including Colorado – roughly 500 acres per bird.

Federal lands need to be returned to the states. The BLM and EPA need to be abolished.

So, how ridiculous is this?

I have seen eagles land on the crown of an operating drilling rig.

I have seen an owl ride the kelly hose, and other owls perch on light stanchions looking for mice making their way among pallets of drilling mud components.

I watched as deer crossed the rig location by the pipe racks (75 feet from the wellbore), evading hunters.

I have worked where bighorn sheep lined up on a ledge above the rig and watched us drill, I'm guessing out of curiosity.

The animals don't care.

They don't get hurt, and life goes on for all of us.

This is more of the weapons-grade anti-energy stupidity out of this administration, and this winter America will feel the bite.

...has raised concerns the action would inflict economic damage.

Raised concerns? Inflicting economic damage is the whole object of the exercise.

Little Hens on the Prairie
The further hilarious adventures of Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn.

http://online.wsj.com/articles/little-hens-on-the-prairie-1403219997

According to an AP report, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources spent $7,363 this spring on 16 flights for 91 endangered greater prairie chickens, or about $81 a bird. Do the chickens qualify for frequent-flier miles? The three-year relocation program is funded by $337,500 in federal grants, $181,730 in state revenues and a $30,000 donation by the Audubon Society. About 60% of the money pays for personnel who transport the birds. In other words, this is more a support program for government workers than for endangered species...

...And in other news, the Department of Natural Resources has announced it is planning a survey to gauge the public’s opinion toward black bears. Illinois doesn’t boast a black bear population, but a cub was recently spotted in the state. Biologists suspect he was lost, not unlike the Governor.

What is more astounding is after the rig is gone, all that remains is a couple of storage tanks and a very small natural gas pump.
The days of the eye sore donkey pump are long gone

The BLM specifies acceptable color schemes for production equipment so it doesn't stand out in the landscape. In this day and age, locations are selected with the intent of being out of view from major thoroughfares, too. The whole idea is to lessen impact, environmental and visual.

Like most government rules, though, it is ever a moving target.

Surveys conducted prior to building a location or even a lease road include:

Raptor surveys, for predatory birds or evidence of nesting. Even old nests which have been unoccupied for years are sufficient to divert a lease road.

Archaeological surveys, seeking 'cultural remains'. A few flakes of flint can change things, too.

Rare/endangered plants.

Rare/endangered animals (including insects).

All this and more must be checked before building the pad to drill and moving the rig in.

If the well is not productive, the location must be reclaimed (along with the lease road), equipment removed and contours restored, and seeded with a BLM approved native grass mixture.

I have been at the shooting range and we had to stop so Bambi and it’s tribe can trapse across our field of fire to get wherever they are going.

Had to stop for condors and even a rabbit...

Wildlife lives just fine everywhere.

Heck, there is an annual Condor watch as they hatch and eventually take flight, spring through summer, every year and this happens on top of the San Jose, CA City Hall, which was only erected 9 years ago.

this stoopit .............period.

So we ban energy development because of a grouse but allow wind turbines and solar panels that slice up and fry eagles and hawks and all sorts of other birds on a regular basis.

Articles like this beg the question: so what?

The people of CO and UT have shown time and again that when push comes to shove they will do little or nothing about it, so why is it an issue? This is their state, their land, and their future. If they want to let dear leader turn their states into nature preserves for blue tongued slugs, it isn’t a concern of mine.

Why couldn’t they just work out some arrangement between the government and the energy companies like they did with that desert lizard down in Texas?

And if they so badly want these chickens and grouses to survive, why don’t they incentivize people to put them in zoos, farms or modest preserves? Maybe these birds are tasty little buggers. :-)

It’s also a little disturbing that I don’t get outraged at this stuff anymore. It’s the new normal.

Somebody with the funds and standing really should sue to have the ESA overturned, so that this country can put people first once again.

At least not until the national average for gasoline is $4.50/gal. :-)
