Beauty-Obsessed Venezuelans Dealing With Another Shortage: Personal Hygiene Products
FOX News Latino ^ | June 19, 2014 | By Ángel Bermúdez

Venezuela, a country that takes great pride in its looks, is dealing with an issue that has the country in a major tizzy – shortages in beauty products. That means women and men so accustomed to looking their best are now having to do without shampoo, cosmetics and, hold your breath, even deodorant.

The cash-strapped government has been dealing with all sorts of scarcities – from staples like milk to medical supplies – because the country has put controls on the purchase of hard currency.

And while certain shortages have been more critical – like diapers and coffins – Venezuelans are still taking the beauty supply crisis seriously.

Shelves in drug stores are virtually empty. Items like nail polish and baby wipes are hard to come by.

Jesús Guillén, a sales clerk in a drugstore in the neighborhood of Altamira in east Caracas, has seen the shortage problem evolve on a daily basis.

“This year things have gotten pretty ugly. We have had supply problems with deodorants, shampoos, sun protectors, body lotions. Currently we have neither diapers nor any kind of products for kids.”

Yet here, in a still somewhat free market, you can still buy those things from Neiman-Marcus and Rodeo Drive down to the lowliest strip mall dollar store or 7/11.

I have seeds for a few plants that can be used as soap. Soapwort, buffalo gourd, and another that I'm blanking out on the name of.

There are some flowers and herbs that can be made into a tea and splashed on the skin to help with body odor.

Another thing to add to the prepper repertoire.

From Wikipedia:

The proven oil reserves in Venezuela are claimed to be the largest in the world, according to an announcement in early 2011 by then president Hugo Chávez and the Venezuelan government. The reported proven reserves reach 297 billion barrels (4.72×1010 m3), surpassing that of the previous long-term world leader, Saudi Arabia.

OPEC said that Saudi Arabia's reserves stood at 265 billion barrels (4.21×1010 m3) in 2009. The appropriateness of this politically beneficial rapid increase in Venezuela's proven reserves is controversial.

==========================

So Venezuela has the money to buy all the deodorant in the western hemisphere. The petrodollars must be going SOMEWHERE. (Swiss bank accounts??)

WHY would 297 billion barrels of oil reserves be "controversial" unless they are a LIE?

Reserves are meaningless for wealth, only production.

Oil in the ground doesn’t become money in the bank, until it is out of the ground.

Deodorant? How bourgeois. You’re allowed to be as hairy and stinky as your comrades in your socialist utopia.

I must be getting old. Gone are the days when I would go into a tiz over nail polish.

Now...Toilet paper. That’s a different matter altogether.
