(AP) — In a setback for the tea party and libertarian forces in Iowa, establishment Republicans on Saturday nominated their candidate for a House seat in one of the nation's most competitive congressional districts.
The nomination of David Young in Iowa's 3rd District punctuated the efforts of Republicans in the party's mainstream who had desperately worked to avoid repeating embarrassing losses suffered in congressional races in other states in 2010 and 2012. It also marked a rollback in influence of libertarians who had controlled the state GOP in recent years.

If Alexander or Corker somehow win in the primaries I see no reason too reward their Democrat voting record with a vote. Its not like they are reaching out to Conservatives anyway.

Matt Scultz, who seemed to lead in "Tea Party" support endorsed Young after he was eliminated. Tea Party conservative Monte Shaw's delegates also preferred Young as their second choice over Zaun. Who is a better judge of whether or not Young is a "RINO", Conservative GOP Secretary of State Matt Schultz and conservative GOP delegates, or the friggin AP?
Maybe Zaun, who this article seems to suggest was the "tea party favorite" (I think Scultz was clearly that man) was just a lousy candidate if all these delegates of the other candidates preferred anybody but him. These delegates were not "RINOs".
Iowa is not a Conservative state.
Chuck Grassley (R), the retiring Senator, is a political institution there, and he could consistently pull down 65% of the vote.
I don't think there is another Republican in the state who could get even close to that number.
Grassley isn’t retiring. Tom Harkin the democrat senator is the one retiring. Thus the possibility of a republican pick up.
Come on, Iowa is a blue state. The very last thing Iowa wants is a conservative representing ANY district in the state.

Sen. Grassley has been very quiet with regard to the Senate Race for Harkin’s seat. He could be a tremendous help to Joni Ernst’s campaign this fall. What are the chances that he would campaign for her in the General Election?
I agree JRF. It’s time to get radical. Let the GOP-E know that they can not screw us, abuse us, ignore us and threaten to “crush” us in the Summer time and then expect us to get in bed with them in November.
If I lived in KY, I’d vote for Grimes and I don’t shive a git how many of our FReeper family tried to influence me to go ahead and vote for Mitch, to help the GOP takeover the Senate and get Harry Reid out of the position of SML. I think we can take the Senate without his seat. That way I can help rid Mitch from the Senate for good, and pull Reid down at the same time.

Not sure if Iowa has an open or closed primary but still smell a rat. Demodummies know that if a “real conservative” (excludes a RHINO) wins, they are in deep dodo as they fear any Tea Party and libertarian candidate.
Todd Akin was not the Tea Party candidate, he was the Democrat Party preferred candidate and they did everything they could to get him the nomination in the primary.
Stop the cr*p that Tea Party candidates are yokels, who put their feet in their mouths.
Look at the loser "mainstream" Republicans for incredible signs of stupidity, like believing we must have amnesty or never win the Presidency again. How stupid do you have to be to believe that?
The thread seems to be missing some important facts.
The establishment pretty much ran the table in Iowa this year.
Young was the fifth place finisher in the 3rd district primary on June 3rd. He’s about as establishment as it gets, being the former chief of staff in DC for Senator Grassley.
But, since no one got the required 35% in the primary, this special convention was required.
The establishment delegates’ first choice was fourth place finisher Monte Shaw, a lobbyist for the ethanol industry. But when it became apparent that the first place finisher, conservative Brad Zaun, was going to win, and Shaw got knocked out, the Shaw delegates virtually all threw their support to David Young, putting him over the top.
Harkin is retiring.
Not Grassley.
Can you believe BOTH those guys were in the Senate when I lived in Iowa, 25 years ago!

I just looked at two polls, and Ernst and Harkin each won once by small margins.
I am not optimistic about Republican chances to take the Senate in November.
It will come down to turn out for the Democrats.
In 2010, Democrats fell asleep after the exuberance of Obama’s 2008 victory.
Democrats will not be asleep in 2014.
Yesterday, I saw a poll for the 12 US Senate Battleground states.
Republicans are up just 3%.
Since Obama and the Democrats have had nothing but bad news for several months, a 3% GOP lead is downright depressing.
What happened was Big Liberty supported Zaun, then proceeded to trash every other candidate out there, descending like bees. Which is ironic considering how they always style themselves as free thinking individualists.
That pissed the supporters of every other candidate off, and being that Young was everyone’s second choice, when it came down to Zaun v. Young, Big Liberty pissed themselves and handed Young the win. In some ways it was glorious.
Is “Big Liberty” a collective name for the Paultarded dorks who claim to be “tea party”?
If Zaun was their boy, that’s explains that, and I’m glad he lost.
Yeppers. The same Pauldrone Mothership crew that ran the Republican Party of Iowa for the last couple of years, teaming up with the Theocrat SoCons to form their unholy ruling coalition.
And Zaun was their boy, which is too bad because Zaun is a good guy! They tried to use liberal Democrat tactics to make him win, and it backfired on them when the supporters of the rest of the candidates played Rebel to their Empire.
