Cosmo mocks young Dugger for guns on wedding registry, angry readers push back
Bizpac Review ^ | June 22, 2014 | Cheryl Carpenter Klimek

Cosmopolitan Magazine probably didn’t anticipate the backlash it would receive when it ran an online article mocking a conservative reality TV show star for what was on her wedding registry.

Jill Dugger, 23, is part of “19 Kids and Counting,” the reality show featuring Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and their 19 children which first aired in 2008. With nine girls and ten boys (including two sets of twins), all of whose names begin with the letter “J,” the series is now in its eighth season.

Dugger and her fiancé, Derek Dillard, tweeted their wedding registry announcement in April, which listed — among a long list of other items — a Maverick 88 shotgun and a Smith and Wesson 15-22 rifle.

Snagging the information from an Us Magazine article, Cosmo jumped at the opportunity to slam the couple, writing this:

It starts off as you would expect, with requests for things from Walmart, Amazon, and Bed Bath & Beyond. Then it gets a little unconventional, with requests for Froot Loops (smart), Hershey’s cereal (smarter), and Raisin Bran (smartest). They also ask for gift cards to Panera, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Subway.

Finally, the weird stuff: They want some WD-40 and two fuh-reaking shotguns.

Readers took to the comments section to voice their displeasure with the tone of the article, with “Sam” writing this:

Umm.. Guns are awesome. Hunting is awesome. Fishing is awesome. You got a problem with this girl and her awesome hobbies? Maybe as a women’s magazine you should be appreciating the fact that women love all kinds of activities (especially a traditionally male dominated one) and no matter what kinda hobbies you’re into, it’s cool.

“Timothy” wrote this:

Oh my god. They want to own a constitutionally protected item that they have a right to own? How about we all support them in their desire to be American. Those who have a problem with it should consider moving to oh, lets say, China. In China you will be protected from the freedom of others.

And “Cat” had the best response of all:

Looking back on things, I wished I’d put firearms in my registry than most of the wine glasses and other impractical things that are part of the typical wedding registry. However, since Cosmo has gone the way of all the other liberal media still trying to vilify guns, allow me to say a couple of things.

1) Your magazine’s target market is women. Women also happen to be the fastest growing demographic of new gun owners. So, jumping onto the gun-grabber’s wagon is probably a stupid move.

2) Since your magazine contains fuh-reaking anti-gun comments about people exercising their constitutionally protected rights, Good-bye.

The couple was married Saturday. BizPac Review wishes them the best in their future together.

As for Cosmo, it appears it will be losing some readers.

WD-40 and shotguns are "weird stuff"?

Just... wow.

Cosmo also promotes a nasty slutty lifestyle of promiscuity that results in STDs, abortions and psychological problems, but that’s all acceptable. That’s truly what’s freakin’ weird.

iIthought everybody used WD40 on the wedding night!.
It does however weaken the bond of the duct tape to the anchor point
but that can be overcome with a half hitch.

Go after these people and mock them relentlessly. Thats what they did to us.

Folks, as stupid as it seems, people are still tribal and you are either at the coll kids table or you arent. High school never ends especially for libs.

But it’s reality for us all today. And the faster we demonize their idiocy and make demonizing idiocy ‘cool’ the more converts come to our side.

I know. Juvenile. But its also reality in the world of today. Besides. 2A/Guns ARE ‘cool’ and worth fighting over/for.

I understand when some people aren’t familiar with ‘old’ history but Phil Robertson is listed under recent events! Forget your history and you’ll repeat mistakes of olden days, without fail.

Well....haven’t read Cosmo since the 1970’s, when there were more bare bosoms in it than in Playboy, and it provided good intel for single guys who wanted to know what single gals were being taught.

“In the war between the sexes, it’s so hard to avoid fraternizing with the `enemy’.”

Picked up a Cosmo recently. It’s gone all tacky & raunchy, kinda like tatoos on women.

ugh

lol. I never understood why people read those kinds of things. Like “Bride” magazine with 400 pages... how many different wedding dresses does there need to be??

“WD-40”

On wedding registry it seems a bit out of place! But then again my WD-40 needs are already met!

It isn’t that leftists don’t remember Phil Robertson, it’s that their limited intellect cannot conceive of an opinion at odds with their opinion being held by anyone. In their crabbed view of the human experience, to disagree with them about anything is to label oneself as stupid or, at best, uninformed.

Those comments are excellent, thanks for sharing this.

The comments are far more cogent that what I’ve seen on this sites of many other more “serious” publications. Cosmo should appreciate their readers, they seem to be smart & discerning people.
