Open Letter to the Parents of Children Crossing Our Southwest Border

This year will be a record number of children who cross the southern U.S. border illegally. Only in the month of May, the number of children not accompanied by their mother or father who crossed our southern border reached more than 9,000 figure, making the total so far this year is about 47,000 . Most of these children come from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, where the violence generated by drugs and gangs terrorizing society. I have a very simple message for parents of these children: sending your child to travel to the United States illegally is not the solution.

Send a child to make the long journey from Central America to the United States is dangerous. The criminal networks trafficking in people you hire to take their child to the United States have no regard for the safety and welfare of children: for them, your child is a commodity to be delivered in exchange for money. In the hands of smugglers, many children experience trauma and psychological abuse suffered by the journey; or, what is worse, they are beaten, underfed, raped or sold into the sex trade and are exposed to all kinds of psychological abuse by criminals. As temperatures rise in July and August, the conditions for attempting to cross our southern border worse.

The long and arduous journey is not only dangerous, but no permits or safe conduct at the end.

The deferred action program for childhood arrivals (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) U.S. Government, also known by the name of DACA does not apply to children who cross the U.S. border illegally today, to those who crossed or cross yesterday morning. To meet the requirements of DACA, the child must have entered the United States prior to June 15, 2007, seven years ago.

In addition, the immigration reform legislation that is currently in Congress offers a way deserved to citizenship, but only for certain people who came to this country before December 31, 2011, inclusive (ie two and a half years ). So let me be clear: there are no roads leading to deferred action or citizenship, nor is there any remedy that Congress is contemplating, for a child who crosses our border illegally today.

By contrast, according to the laws and U.S. policies, anyone who is arrested by illegally crossing our border is subject to deportation priority, regardless of age. This means that if your daughter or son is arrested while crossing the border illegally, will be charged with violating immigration laws of the United States and deportation proceedings were initiated against him: a not recommended status. The document is issued in the name of his son is not a permit, but a notice to appear in removal proceedings before an immigration judge.

As Secretary of Homeland Security, I have seen in person to the children in our Texas processing center. As a parent, I watched the faces of these children and saw fear and vulnerability.

The desire to want their children to have a better life in America is understandable. But exposing an unaccompanied child to the risks of illegal immigration to achieve that dream are too high and "permits" do not exist.

In my humble opinion, that warning is not nearly strong enough-it does not address the very real dangers of death, physical abuse, and virtual enslavement in the sex trade, or as a drug mule for cartels. The coyotes do not care about the kids-they have been paid up front...

Warning the parent that their kid will be arrested and DEPORTED post haste-not given a paper that “is not a permit” to stay would be better-many people there can barely read, if at all, but the words “immigration”-or in the vernacular, “la migra” are very well understood and it isn’t good news...

Whoever said we should start adopting them out (the littlest ones, anyway) might have a point.

Send them up here, parental rights terminated.

It’s just an idea, I don’t have any details or how it would work.

But these parents have abandoned their children. That is plain to see.

I’m sure there are plenty of couples who would adopt if that could be done-but just as sure as they did, one or both biological parents would get a lawyer and sue the adoptive parents for money and the kid-that happens a lot when foreign children are adopted, because we Americans are good hearted and want to help kids.
