Posted on 06/23/2014 2:37:18 AM PDT by markomalley
The recent turmoil in Iraq brought on by the rise of the Sunni extremist group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has ironically struck a blow to the American Lefts endlessly repeated narrative that there were no weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) in Iraq prior to the war. The State Department and other U.S. government officials have revealed that ISIS now occupies the Al Muthanna Chemicals Weapons Complex. Al Muthanna was Saddam Husseins primary chemical weapons facility, and it is located less than 50 miles from Baghdad.
The Obama administration claims that the weapons in that facility, which include sarin, mustard gas, and nerve agent VX, manufactured to prosecute the war against Iran in the 1980s, do not pose a threat because they are old, contaminated and hard to move. We do not believe that the complex contains CW materials of military value and it would be very difficult, if not impossible to safely move the materials, said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
The administrations dubious rationale is based on information provided by the Iraq Study Group, which was tasked with finding WMDs in the wars aftermath. They found the chemical weapons at Al Muthanna, but they determined that both Iraq wars and inspections by the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) had successfully dismantled the facility, and that the remaining chemical weapons were rendered useless and sealed in bunkers. The report called the weapons facility a wasteland full of destroyed chemical munitions, razed structures, and unusable war-ravaged facilities, the 2004 report stated.
Yet other sections of the same report were hardly reassuring. Stockpiles of chemical munitions are still stored there, it stated. The most dangerous ones have been declared to the UN and are sealed in bunkers. Although declared, the bunkers contents have yet to be confirmed. It added, These areas of the compound pose a hazard to civilians and potential black-marketers.
Another report paints an even more disturbing picture of the Muthanna facility. It warned that the number and status of Saddams sarin-filled rockets was unknown because facilities were not able to be inspected, leaving investigators only able to surmise about the weapons condition. Even in degraded conditions, the report said, these rockets still posed a proliferation risk:
Although the damaged Bunker 13 at Muthanna contained thousands of sarin-filled rockets, the presence of leaking munitions and unstable propellant and explosive charges made it too hazardous for UNSCOM inspectors to enter. Because the rockets could not be recovered safely, Iraq declared the munitions in Bunker 13 as destroyed in the Gulf War and they were not included in the inventory of chemical weapons eliminated under UNSCOM supervision.
Because of the hazardous conditions in Bunker 13, UNSCOM inspectors were unable to make an accurate inventory of its contents before sealing the entrances in 1994. As a result, no record exists of the exact number or status of the sarin-filled rockets remaining in the bunker. In the worst-case scenario, the munitions could contain as much as 15,000 liters of sarin. Although it is likely that the nerve agent has degraded substantially after nearly two decades of storage under suboptimal conditions, UNMOVIC cautioned that the levels of degradation of the sarin fill in the rockets cannot be determined without exploring the bunker and taking samples from intact warheads. If the sarin remains highly toxic and many of the rockets are still intact, they could pose a proliferation risk.
Nonetheless, U.S. officials, who claimed they were well aware of the facility insisted that the United States wouldnt have left it there if it were a genuine threat. They also continued to stress that the takeover by ISIS doesnt constitute a military gain by the group because the weapons would prove useless, even if ISIS were able to penetrated the sealed bunkers where they are stored. ISIS has reportedly yet to gain access to the bunkers.
However, there are numerous holes in these assessments. The Obama administration, eager to leave a sovereign, stable, and self-reliant Iraq as the president described it in 2011, paid little heed to the prospect of large swaths of that nation being overrun by terrorists who have taken over key cities and military bases, and confiscated sophisticated American military equipment in the process. One defense official conceded as much, telling the Wall Street Journal that had they known the Maliki government would lose control so soon, they might not have left the weapons behind. And Psakis contention that the weapons could not be moved safely even by terrorists is hardly reassuring when one considers the reality that ISIS uses suicide bombings as one of it chief military tactics.
A far more critical consideration is the possibility that many of the Iraqi Sunnis who have joined ISIS due in large part to their alienation by the Shiite-dominated government of Nouri al-Maliki are comprised of former Saddam Hussein loyalists, some of whom may have working knowledge of the chemical weapons stored at Al Muthanna. Former WMD specialist Paul Perrone extrapolated on where such working knowledge might lead. Im more concerned with the prospect that these Muslim terrorists have access to formulas or precursors that would enable them to create their own WMD, he warned.
The latest revelations on the details of Saddams weapons stockpile, now potentially in the hands of Sunni radicals, affirm the Bush administrations characterization of Iraq as a territory situated in a hotbed of radicalism, flooded with a bevy of highly dangerous weapons and overseen by a criminal rogue regime. Indeed, the WMDs are to say nothing of the Hussein governments nuclear weapons program, also put to a stop by intervention in Iraq. In 2008, American and Iraqi officials had completed nearly the last chapter in dismantling Saddam Husseins nuclear program with the removal of hundreds of tons of natural uranium from the countrys main nuclear site, the New York Times reported. Approximately 600 tons of yellowcake was removed from the Tuwaitha facility, the main site for Iraqs nuclear program. According to global security.org, uranium enrichment levels of 95 percent were achieved at the Tuwaitha facility. That site was also the location of the Osirak nuclear reactor destroyed by Israel in 1981.
And in what sounded like a harbinger of the future, the Times noted that although the yellowcake could not be used in its current form to produce a nuclear device or dirty bomb, the unstable environment in Iraq necessitated its removal, lest it fall into the wrong hands. In an updated correction to the article, the Times notes that the Osriak nuclear reactor theoretically produced plutonium, which can fuel an atomic bomb.
The Left dismissed this reality by claiming the yellowcake had been in Iraq prior to 1991 and thus was not the same yellowcake Bush referred to in his 2003 State of the Union address as part of his justification for invading Iraq. Led by former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, the emboldened anti-war Left attempted to turn the claim into a scandal saying that Bush knowingly lied to the American public regarding Iraqs effort to procure yellowcake from Niger.
Ultimately, Wilson and his story were thoroughly discredited a year later by a Senate Select Committee report, which further noted that President Bush had been fully justified in including the infamous 16 words regarding that intelligence in his speech. Moreover the left has never bothered to explain why yellowcake procured before 1991 was any less dangerous in terms of its WMD potential, given Saddam Husseins regular defiance of international law also enunciated by Bush as one of the primary reasons for deposing him.
In 2010, documents procured by Wikileaks revealed more information on the WMD threat posed by Iraq that was known to the government. The self-described whistleblowers, who could hardly be called pro-war, released 392,000 military reports from Iraq that revealed several instances of American encounters with potential WMDs or their manufacture. These included 1200 gallons of a liquid mustard agent in Samarra that tested positive for a blister agent; tampering by large earth movers thought to be attempting to penetrate the bunkers at Muthanna; the discovery of a chemical lab and a chemical cache in Fallujah; and the discovery of a cache of weapons hidden at an Iraqi Community Watch checkpoint with 155MM rounds that subsequently tested positive for mustard.
Foreign involvement with WMDs in Iraq was documented as well. A war log from January 2006 speaks of 50 neuroparalytic projectiles smuggled into Iraq from Iran via Al Basrah; Syrian chemical weapons specialists who came in to support the chemical weapons operations of Hizballah Islami (Hezbollah); and an Al Qaeda chemical weapons expert from Saudi Arabia sent to assist 200 individuals awaiting an opportunity to attack coalition forces with Sarin. As Wired Magazine characterized it, the Wikileaks documents revealed that for several years after the initial invasion, U.S. troops continued to find chemical weapons labs, encounter insurgent specialists in toxins and uncover weapons of mass destruction.
Left-wing members in Congress were certainly aware of these threats and more posed by the Hussein regime, which lead them to unanimously authorize war and even vocally champion its necessity. Their assessment was based on nothing less than the very intelligence known to the Bush administration at the time. Secretary of State John Kerry, as a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations before war was authorized, said, Theres no question in my mind that Saddam Hussein has to be toppled one way or another, but the question is how and that there was likewise no question that Hussein continues to pursue weapons of mass destruction, and his success can threaten both our interests in the region and our security at home.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton intoned in 2002:
In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons.
Justifying her well-known position, Clinton said later said in a 2003 interview with Code Pink, I ended up voting for the resolution after carefully reviewing the information, intelligence that I had available, talking with people whose opinions I trusted I would love to agree with [Code Pink], but I cant, based on my own understanding and assessment of the situation.
However, these statements were made in the wake of 9/11 when Democrats sensed hawkishness was the key to their political fortunes. A few short years later, sabotaging the war that they had started and betraying the troops that they had sent to the field was where Democrats political futures lied. Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and others made this transition through a blatant campaign of deceit that went virtually unchallenged by the media. Clinton, for example, averred on the campaign trail, [I]f we had known then what we know now there never would have been a vote and I never would have voted to give this President that authority and claimed that she didnt know that her vote for the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002″ was a vote for war.
The con is still on going. In September of last year, Secretary Kerry brazenly asserted that he and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel had opposed the presidents decision to go into Iraq and that evidence was used to persuade all of us that authority ought to be given. Chuck Hagel, in fact, also voted in favor of the war before jumping ship, forsaking the lost lives he squandered in the field and joining with the hard left. As for the manipulated evidence canard cited by Kerry, the latest details of Saddams WMD stockpile something there can be no doubt that the Secretary of State was aware of exposes yet again the lefts great deception on the danger of Hussein and the motivation behind the Iraq war.
And now ISIS, disowned by al Qaeda for being even more ruthless than it is, controls a chemical facility containing contents declared destroyed because they couldnt be recovered safely, along with bunkers containing contents yet to be confirmed. And an administration with an unparalleled facility for lying assures us everything will be fine because the chemical weapons have no useful military value and cant be moved safely. As with the rest of the Lefts handling of Iraq, this is an analysis that no one should have faith in.
Permit a small eye roll at the thought that people who have zero problem in murdering, raping, and torturing others and blowing themselves up are even mildly concerned about moving CW safely.
If bunkers can be sealed, they can also be unsealed.
When given the opportunity in the Fox interview why didn’t Dick Cheney speak of these findings.
That’s what I don’t get. WTH?
If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one nearby, does the tree make a sound?
The mainstream media is not reporting this story, just as it is not reporting Lerner’s hard drive crash and many other stories that debunk the prevailing progressive talking points. The only people hearing this “news” are those who disagree with the administration. The vast majority of the people are more concerned with the antics of the Kardashians than what is happening to their nation.
Quite frankly, we are at the end of the Republic because the majority of the people just don’t care. They are ready for dictatorship and they are going to get it.
I had a good bud on the UN inspection team that told me years ago the WMDs were there but mostly shuttled to Syria. The inspection team also had a mole to keep them one step behind in locating said items before they were removed. The decision was made to let them go because we would have had to declare war on Syrian terrorist and another front would have been a problem.
WMD? Mustard gas (WWI)? C’mon man, we weren’t going to go to war over mustard!
“Nuclear Weapons” are WMDs. (weapons of MASS destruction). That was the justification used, nukes! There is no proof that they were even capable of making nuclear weapons, let alone be able to deliver them any real distance.
We went to war over mustard and yellow cake? (Yellow cake from Niger was a hoax used to scare us into war).
“Bush lied, thousands died” turns out to be a true statement.
I think the assassination plot against his dad (Bush 41), had a lot more to do with getting Saddam Hussein than mustard & cake.
The Israelis proved how to deal with the Iraqi nuclear threat............ BOOM!
So, if I can distill some essence here, we have highly extreme
militants in control of potentially deadly chemical weapons. Suppose any of these militants might have backgrounds in biochemical engineering or biochemistry? The fact that they (the weapons)are old and unstable shouldn’t be any barrier to success for those willing to sacrifice themselves for the will of allah.
Still being reported as the “False pretense for starting the Iraq war...”
Was the Inspection MOLE that CREEP that got arrested at Burger King for soliticing a 12 year old girl for SEX?? I forget his name, sadly his UGLY face is still in my memory.
“People say we’re not fighting for oil. Of course we are.”
Then-U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel in 2007
On a positive note, thanks to,Soros’ $BILLION campaign against Bush and the “failed” war in Iraq, over a decade ago, the abuse of the US military by Obama, is limited. I would hate for my son to be deployed under this manchurian Commander in Chief doing Qatar’s bidding. It would be absolutely shameless for Obama who promised to bring back the troops, to take “neocon” “warmongering” actions for a much less grievious offense than that of 9/11.
Americans have a president beholden to something other than the American people, but the rest of the world has much more to fear than we do. China has the largest investment in oil rigs in Iraq, most nations have fragile economies that will go into oil shock if prices rise. EU is completely dependent on Russian energy, and Russia has allegiance with the cartels. The African killings of entire villages and anyone Christian, by Islamists, is a future possibility for many countries, with Muslim populations that exceed native ones in many cities. UAE nations have groomed and coddled their little Islamic Revolutionaries, and they they are independently wealthy monsters thanks to the drug trade. They will turn on the caliphates in a Dubai minute. I have doubt they bought and paid for Obama via Soros and other bankers. They will pay a heavy price and their is no reason for our boys to defend them.
Thanks to foreign operatives such as Soros who slandered and maligned the actions of former President Bush and install their candidate over a decade ago, it wont be American military getting killed to stop a monster too many nations and institutions were complicit with.
If Obama wants to send troops back there to protect the world from 25 year old sarin gas leaking out of old shells, he will be laughed back to wherever he came from.
Hard to believe you haven’t been zotted yet.
Your posting history is quite telling.
Add me to your ping list please. Thanks
WoW!...the way I explained it was...”...these people don’t deserve to be free!”
As if you actually ever knew...
FWIW Bush cited Hussein’s continued violation of UN resolutions as the justification for invading Iraq. The WMDs were a supporting point.
I know you’re a liberal because everything in your post is based on self-delusion, political lies and historical revisionism.
Mustard gas and sarin are both WMDs.
“A “weapon of mass destruction” (WMD or WoMD) is a nuclear, radiological, biological, chemical or other weapon that can kill and bring significant harm to a large number of humans or cause great damage to man-made structures (e.g. buildings), natural structures (e.g. mountains), or the biosphere. The scope and application of the term has evolved and been disputed, often signifying more politically than technically. Coined in reference to aerial bombing with chemical explosives, it has come to distinguish large-scale weaponry of other technologies, such as chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear. This differentiates the term from more technical ones such as chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons (CBRN).
Liberals lie, Americans die. See Gulf of Tonkin staged event leading to congressional resolution in 1964 giving Lyndon Johnson his war in SE Asia.
No doubt. Typical liberal spew - when their pretense is obliterated, they change the pretense. First no WMDs, then when WMDs are found they claim that they don’t cause massive enough destruction and the meaning of the term should be modified to fit their agenda.
CX, Mustard and Sarin are definitely WMDs, they cause mass destruction to troops - the more troops in harm’s way, the more destruction.
It is sad really - that so many people can’t think critically.
faucetman, everything in Justa’s post is correct, but he/she don’t go far enough. Even more so than actual stockpiles of WMD’s, Bush was concerned with WMD programs. Such a program is more dangerous than actual stockpiles of weapons. Weapons without a program are a finite threat; once used, they are gone. With a WMD program in place, Hussein could have produced more weapons.
The talking point of the lefties was that no such programs existed. Now, we find out that the ISIS muzzies are taking over a chemical weapons factory? You mean that’s not a WMD program? What reality do you live in? (Not to mention that there are nuclear reactors, such as the Osirik one that are capable of producing plutonium, which could be used for nuclear weapons. That would certainly also seem to qualify as a WMD program.)
That part I can agree with. As for the rest, pure libspeak BS.
If Kerry ever catches Obama off the golf course he should remind him that as the leader of the anti war movement in Vietnam, and his opposition to the war in Iraq, after approving the war in 2002, has left Kerry with zero credibility especially among the armed forces. He has business being in Iraq now.
“My belief is that service in this tyrannical regime only advances interests contrary to the United States. In other words the military is being misused and abused against the interests of the United States. “
That’s exactly what has happened..
Famed author Seymour Hersh, clearly documents Obama’s illlegal use of the US military to support the Muslim Brotherhood, and Al Qaeda, in his book, “The Red Line, and The Rat Line.

CONFIRMED: The DEA Struck A Deal With Mexico’s Most Notorious Drug Cartel (They claimed feds agreed they could traffic into Chicago)
JAN. 13, 2014
The link between drugs and crime, including violent crime, would be hard to overstate in Chicago. Eighty-six percent of adult males arrested in Chicago last year tested positive for drug use. Chicago, with a population of 2.7 million, had 506 murders in 2012, the highest per capita among the four most populous U.S. cities.
These reports have been buried: “Opiates are now the leading cause of accidental deaths, surpassing car crashes and alcohol”
The SEC sees no evil while Wall Street banks launder $BILLIONS in cartel
JP Morgan openly launders money in cities such as Caracas, Venezuela. Chavez turned that nation into one of the biggest drug distributors of the world. The people have no toilet paper, but they have plenty of cocaine.
DEA has been caught laundering money as well, “Agency officials declined to publicly discuss details of their work, citing concerns about compromising their investigations.” How convenient?
Banks Laundering Cartel Drug Money
Not aware of that connection. The mole was there so that mobile WMD labs could move a day or more ahead of the inspection team’s arrival. The Col said they always seemed to know our schedule and time of arrival. Most of the lab’s simply went to Syria to escape detection.
A good hit there...
According to the left, thousands of sarin filled artillery shells is equal to no WMD. What absolute scumbags and poor excuses for humans these slime balls are.
Because the US wanted to bomb WMD facilities in Syria and Iran. They would not have been able to do that if the world discovered that bombing the facilities results in the WMD still being there and it makes them impossible to safely move and discard. Not to mention it will kill the people living nearby.
And that number grows every day.
We need a photoshop whiz to combine the Oh Jeez guy with the nuke so his head explodes.
Because we sure seem to have flown a whole lot of ‘hoax’ out of the sandbox. And sometimes the Aw Geez guy or a hydrogen bomb just isn’t enough on their own to cover the magnificence of the stupid the Cheshire Conservatives display.
But by their powers combined...well, now we’re talkin!
Yes, I wish. My go-to guy isn’t here anymore. I really miss him.
Got anyone in mind? The gif as you describe it would be a classic.
KC Lion maybe? Dunno for sure. He’s a big pic guy. If not he might know someone.
Chemical weapons are not WMD’s? Okay. Whatever.
Falsely named troll poster JohnGalt, is that you?
Three mustard gas shells were rigged as IEDs, and a sarin shell was rigged as an IED.
IF those weapons didn’t exist, as you leftists claimed, how did they get there?
ONE shell is proof.
Same line of BS used by a troll named “JohnGalt”.
I’d say: retread.
This needs its own thread!!!!
Connects lotsa dots.....
Reminds me of an editor I once worked with and mention occasionally on these threads.
In a nutshell, the soldiers who returned with stories of finding, working with and shipping out WMDs were merely seeking attention.
Thats the mentality at work.
BOOM! Exactly what he deserved. Looking at a little bit of his history he’s been on the wrong site for quite some time.
A Paulite calling FReepers liars because he considers Rand a conservative, he can take the 0bama loving Rand with him.
Well the romney fans are back in force and the paul fans are still pressing him for president. Everything old is new again.
Hey, Tex! Nice to see you.
JimRob did the ZOT BOOM! in Post #30.
Justa upthread at Post #19 defined WMDs, and chemical weapons are definitely WMDs.
The logic disconnect is amazing.
The Polish military contingent there found some stuff.
Air defense surface to air missiles that Iraq was banned from having, made in France, and shipped in around the same time we hit the place
I seem to recall some group having found an empty chemical shell that was ready to have the chemicals added to it.
It had the green band etc..
Several FReepers have expressed surprise at his amazing longevity here. He’s a Class of 2008, and been here over 5-1/2 years.
Definitely decloaked and flamed out. Probably trying for a ZOT for a while now.
