Skip to comments.7 Hard Drives Failing: What are the odds? These are the odds. [IRS SCANDAL]
Posted on 06/24/2014 1:29:22 PM PDT by QT3.14
I run a data center. Disk drives that are left running continuously last between two and three years. Three years is about 36 months.
The odds of a disk failing in any given month are roughly one in 36. The odds of two different drives failing in the same month are roughly one in 36 squared, or 1 in about 1,300. The odds of three drives failing in the same month is 36 cubed or 1 in 46,656. The odds of seven different drives failing in the same month is 37 to the 7th power = 1 in 78,664,164,096.

And the odds of these drives all failing within 10 days of an investigation starting are?
Those of us in the data storage industry are having a good laugh over this whole mess.
Do a really need a /sarc tag here?

This is the party of Arkancide. Killing 7 hard drives is nothing for these communist bastards!
The odds of you being audited, 1-1
I agree about the stats on seven hard drives but even in a data center running continuously, they last longer than three years, usually up to five years or more. They become obsolete quick, too.
somewhere out there a Dumpster Diver has these hard drives
Sure. The chances are very slim. But, the other possibility is they’re all lying at the same time. How bout those odds? Dem lovers lying, really?
More than 7 harddrives. All of those in the email chain (did she only ever write to/receive mail from 6 persons at the IRS)?

What do you mean, he’s a racist? MATH is racist!
Caused by global warming, no doubt!
Server drives and most likely with redundant backups surely contains a backup copy stored somewhere. And from the IRS of all places-
Yeah, I’m just taking notes so I’m prepared to deal with some green college kid from the IRS that wants to lecture me about my record keeping.....
And what are the odds of an I.T. person ignoring a failed hard drive in an array, let alone ignoring seven failures. I was responsible for maintaining hundreds of servers, some of which had complicated RAID arrays. Rare to have a failed hard drive not swapped within a day or two and have the system rebuild the data on the new one. I was asked to assist other departments that had problems after I.T. personnel quit, in one case a pair of servers that went unattended for over a year with a failed hard drive, the rest of the RAID array kept the servers going. Bad management there. So the IRS must have incredibly bad I.T. management, and the lot should be fired.
Nearly 100%. If the person being investigated is a democrat.
You mean off-site storage on a single retail home PC isn’t best practice?
The IRS is also desperately hoping nobody grasps the ‘redundant’ part of RAID.
What about raid. Disks fail but that doesn’t mean the data is lost because the disks are redundant
Seriously...These people should have been in jail a long time ago.
Occam’s razor anyone
Depending on the level of RAID, one or more disks can fail without a problem, except for performance but I’ve never had an array fail due to two disks failing.
Email server anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Glad you're enjoying it, but don't you think maybe you should bring your "data storage" brothers together and make your points known in the media? I did myself in my early days as being on the sidewalks with a bullhorn and was also the central organizer for the first Free Republic gathering in DC.
You folks who have the technical knowledge are the ones we need to see on the evening news. Still, can't blame you if you want a low profile and not jeapordize your income nor your families. Live in peace as you look into the mirror.
Lois Lerner just won the mega super power ball lottery!
Oh yeah, its Bush’s fault and you’re a racist.
They take us for fools.
7 Hard drives failing

5 Lame excuses...
My drives last more like 8 to ten years. I’d start with 1 in 100 per month... so the odds are even higher.
One thing I’m not clear on is whether these drives all supposedly failed in the same month. I heard some testimony last night which said the multiple failures of key personnel drives was either incorrect or overstated, so I’m unclear what the latest is.
Help on that point, anyone?
What’s the matter Obama administration? ‘Afraid of a little TRANSPARENCY?
Hey I.R.S. :
I think all of the U.S. taxpayers’ individual financial records’ were 2014 lost in a series of hard drive crashes too. There is no income to report this year. What are you going to do about it?

I would love to see someone say to Mr. Koskinen:
“Since you demand to act outside of the law, you no longer have any Constitutional protections. Sword cuts both ways there tiger.”
Oops, I forgot, we are talking about the administration that makes Jimmy Carter look like JFK.
Agreed. I posted that yesterday. It follows the walking and quacking duck logic.
But, if the Lefties had their way they would try and deflect reality by claiming Hanlon's Razor.
Good math but there is one problem. That number only applies if the IRS only had those 7 computers. It’s a more complicated equation when you factor in that they have N thousand computers and those specific seven fail.
18 1/2 minutes of missing telephone conversation was enough to convince a group of GOP critters to talk Nixon into resigning.
What are we talking here—months, years of e-mails between Lerner and six other people?
The most succinct explanation now is the same one this same party drew then: there is a conspiracy to destroy or conceal incriminating evidence, and it includes the WH.
Did you work with a pool of 82 hard drives in making these calculations? That’s how many were included in Oversight’s request for IRS emails(notwithstanding all that should be available via server(s). The FBI would not be interested in pursuing this, since the IRS feeds them, too.
Thats true but these 7 are the relevant computers (i.e. the from and to of her emails)
My first computer, a C64, never had a crash...neither did my IBM, Gateway 2000, Lenovo, Alienware or my custom built computers. But the IRS has a hard drive problem?. BS...
I’m on the manufacturing side of things. Not an IT guy. Certainly not an expert in the field. But, if I understand how these things work, why is it so difficult for the REALLY smart people in DC to get even a basic grasp on how these things work?
somewhere out there a Dumpster Diver has these hard drives
I want the backup tapes ,, sure hope someone saved them when ordered to overwrite/destroy them and just relabeled new tapes to replace the valuable ones.
Not to mention he only "endeavoured to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service... when it looks more and more like ∅ carried it out.
