Sharon Doyle forgot to bring her gun to work on Monday. Her decision to go home to retrieve it may have ultimately saved her life.
The 46-year-old store owner returned to Stans Health Foods in the Mayfair section of the city later that day. As she continued to work alone, police say a 47-year-old man entered the store with a knife in hand, immediately announcing a robbery.
The man went behind the counter, grabbed the register and threw it to the ground, forcing it open, according to investigators. After grabbing some cash, he allegedly stood up and put his knife to Doyles chest.
Unbeknownst to him, Doyle was armed not only with her .38 revolver but also years of law enforcement training. Before becoming a store owner, Doyle worked as a secret service agent in Philadelphia, protecting visiting dignitaries such as President Bush. Shes also a former Philadelphia Police Officer.
I was in a few different areas of law enforcement, Doyle said. For family life it really wasnt working out quite the way I wanted it to and it led me here. While she is no longer on the force, Doyle never forgot what she learned. It was that knowledge that she credits with giving her the ability to fight back.
I just went into a mode like this is what has to be done, Doyle said. One of us is walking out of the door and its gonna be me.
Doyle pulled out her weapon and fired, striking the man in the torso. He collapsed to the ground and Doyle called police.
When police arrived he was behind the counter, unconscious on the ground, said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. He still had a $100 bill clutched in his left hand."
The unidentified man, who police say had a lengthy criminal record for burglary, was taken to Aria-Torresdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 p.m. Police say the shooting was a justifiable homicide and charges will not be filed.
Doyle says she doesnt regret pulling the trigger.
It might have saved somebody else because he looked like he was on a mission, she said. So, if it wouldnt have been here, it may have been somewhere else."
Don't forget your .38.
Nice outcome, but it was lucky for her she had such a lengthy former LE career.
Different outcome for a peasant, I would think (charges).
Dude lost the “Rock, Knife, Gun” game.
A .38 snubbie is a nice weapon at that range. Very nice.
Just thinking. Why does a small business keep $100 in the register?
We always dropped $100 bills in the safe as soon as we got them. And we were never supposed to have more than five $20’s in the drawer.
Just a bit odd.
Nothing about the perp. Not that it matters, he’s dead and all. The absence of a description leads me to believe it was a Democrat, because if it was a Republican they would have mentioned it in the first sentence.
And the second sentence. And the third. and the......
NICE JOB..one less scum bag walking the streets
Incidentally, the caption below the video says “gunman”, but I don’t think that applies, unless being shot makes one a gunman. Before he was shot, he was armed with a knife.
Woo Hoo! Another instant Darwin award winner.
One of my friends used to own a bar in Las Vegas. They were robbed one night. His wife who ran the register gave the robber a wad of bills. The one on top was a $100, under it was a $20 but all the rest were ones. He thought he was getting a lot of money but not so much.
It was a drop $100 - she was a Philadelphia cop after all.
“Nothing about the perp.”
This is Philly - 99% odds he’s (was) Amish.
Sameo, sameo. He was probably out on probation or released after having served a reduced sentence - in other words another example of our screwed-up Justice system that recycles these people back into society - and then the public has to do their job for them.
Ah, now that makes sense.
Female doctor raped in Philly by illegal immigrant from Central America.
U Of Penn MD raped by SOB that was deported in 2013. Thanks Obama
Just guessing, but I bet she put one right through his “dog tags”. I seriously doubt that the Secret Service trains its people to shoot to wound.
Maybe he was a “Werewolf of Philly” (Warren Zevon).
He needed killin. :-)
why would anyone regret saving their life from someone who would murder them?
idon’t’care if it’s an old fart, a young punk, whatever color, race, man, woman, stupid kid or bunch of thugs, trying to murder me. i won’t have a single regret.
When my Mom owned a Quick Stop convenience store a fellow came in, put a knife to my ribs and demanded all the cash in the till.
My brother handed that loser our loot and he beat feet.
When the cops came they noticed a shotgun leaning up against the wall.
We had been shooting earlier and put it there for safe keeping.
Cop asked if it was loaded and we replied it was.
he then laughed and wanted to know why we didn’t shoot the guy.
told him we forgot it was even there.
Cop then asked my Mom if we knew how to shoot.
She laughed and said the guy was lucky “All my kids can shoot and they don’t miss”.
Dude was a lucky bastard, til 30 minutes later when the cops caught them and we I.D.’d him.
cop said next time shoot the guy....
we laugh about that story to this day.
I was 14, my brother was 13...
As I said, “Freshly Dead”
As I said, “Freshly Dead”
Surely the perp was an “aspiring rapper” who was “turning his life around” and a “good boy” who “never caused no trouble.”
They don’t appear to have a problem identifying her....
Good job! You go, girl
Also one less scum bag that the tax payer will not have to support or that some moronic judge will let loose.
Hah, funny tag.
I wish I could say “one less democrat voter,” but it doesn’t seem to work that way.
