Artesia facility to hold up to 700 detainees (New Mexico)

LAS CRUCES – A New Mexico center where Border Patrol agents receive basic training will house as many as 700 of the people they are being taught to apprehend: immigrants who have crossed the U.S. border illegally.

The Department of Homeland Security’s recent decision to turn part of the Artesia training facility into a detention center for migrant families – the latest move by the Obama administration to respond to a wave of Central American migrants crossing into the United States – is an effort to relieve the poor conditions in overcrowded holding stations in south Texas.

The Artesia facility could begin functioning as a detention center with 700 beds within a week or 10 days, according to Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., who was briefed by Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Women with children would be held “four or five days,” Pearce said Monday, while the government prepares to deport them. The Artesia center will not be taking unaccompanied minors.

Immigrants who express a “credible fear” are afforded an opportunity to present their case to an asylum officer, said Michelle Brané, director of migrant rights at the nonprofit Women’s Refugee Commission. That process can take months.

~~snip~~

Since the federal fiscal year began in October, the Border Patrol has apprehended in south Texas nearly 140,000 people from countries other than Mexico – mostly from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. The numbers are well above the roughly 97,000 people apprehended in that region in all of fiscal 2013.

I imagine its a shell game and only a very small percentage will actually be deported after claiming refuge status. And about those 140,000 other than Mexico illegals, how many are from Middle-Eastern countries?

Those are my thoughts too CedarDave. I suspect very few will be deported.

This is yet another article and no mention of diseases.

That must mean that our anti-WMD weapons are working and Obama's WMD attack against the U.S. has failed. I guess. Golly.

The entity entrusted to legally bust illegals now serves as their hoteliers.

The entity charged with ensuring proper gun paperwork became a narco gun exporter.

The apolitical entity charged with collecting tax on behalf of the whole nation now instead serves as a political attack weapon of one party.

OTHERS? Remind me which I’ve forgotten.

No, this facility is an old college that has been converted and expanded tremendously. It has high chain link fencing topped with razor wire and gates with armed guards.

They will not even let old students of the school on the property.

It is used for all kinds of federal officer training, not just border patrol.

That process can take months...I imagine every illegal there will make this claim.. They will not resolve this with very quick court dates. This will take years..If any bother to show up for court dates. It’s not like ICE will come for them.
